Winter Storm Category 5 Ale in a standard pint beer glass
This here pounder has fine layer of yeast at her bottom. It won't send you to Davy
Jones' locker but will protect your brew from the rigors of life at sea ! Hang on…
it's a Category 5 Ale ! With a full ruby hue, vivid malty flavor, and earthy hop
aroma, Winter Storm is an original - an Imperial ESB for the winter months.
Clipper City Brewing Co. Baltimore, MA
Appearance
A nice copper brown color, light cloudiness and sediment but advertised as such.
Head is off-white in color, rocky, and of long duration.
Mahogany to ruby red.
Rocky head and well carbonated. Not as viscous as other examples though
seemingly much in solution. Sediment from the yeast is there to provide some
cloudiness to an otherwise clean beer. Since this is advertised as a bottle
conditioned beer it did not receive much penalty for the cloudiness.

Aroma
Very strong aroma presence. Some citrusy sweetness, plenty of roasted malt and
hoppy spiciness. Well balanced though, in that none particularly overshadows
the others.
Very discernable fruity aroma. Cherry and orange with citrus spice as
well. As pour subsides, the spicy citrus dominates. Comparable to fine foreign
ale examples. Towards the end floral notes join the citrus to provide a final
punch, perhaps ales greatest attribute.

Palate
Clean, medium creaminess, some citrus sweetness, and even a hop zing
noticed right off. Pleasant with some complexity, just a whisper on the thin side
for an ale.
Grabbing and powerful for an ale. Spicy and bitters almost spin out of
control but balance as more is consumed. Significant IBU isn't masked by sweet.
Flavors come through in the nose and are a little one dimensional. There are a
wide blend of flavors but initially come across as a blended whole.

Finish
The flavor explodes ! Roasted malt, citrusy sweetness, and a complex array of
hop kicks. Awesome balance but an alternating one. Flavors dance from strong
roasted malt, sweet, and hoppy zing. Never cancelling each other out but
alternating back and forth with each. This beer also has a slight warming quality
to it.
Moderate creamy sweetness leaves rapidly to give the drinker a somewhat
bitter back mouth feel. Floral, zesty, and robust flavors develop afterwards.
Patience is the key in fully enjoying this beer.

Synopsis
A very good, complex, full flavored beer. The drinker that is wary of hops should
beware however, as this one has more significant hop flavors included in the mix
over that of most ales. Some may find the hops overdone.  For one accustomed
to full flavored (including hoppy) beers this has a real bite to it but stops short of
being unpleasantly bitter.
To add comparison, this one seems more like a good
dark IPA. More of a heavy summer beer, it's quite drinkable in moderation and
admittedly has character and is thirst quenching.
