A truly authentic Belgian-style wheat or "white" ale, this Rascal is unfiltered (yep,
that's yeast on the bottom !) and cleverly spiced with coriander and Curacao
orange peel producing a refreshingly fruity thirst quencher. For maximum flavor,
slowly pour into a glass leaving a small amount in the bottle, swirl the remainder
and the yeast, top off your brew ! Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malted
barley, imported Belgian malted wheat, imported Czech Saaz hops, coriander,
Curacao orange peel and Belgian yeast.
Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
A very pale and cloudy yellow color but this is an unfiltered wheat beer so the
cloudiness is not a shock. Moderate effervescence, good relative to style. Head is
snow white, not very tall but with some crater-like rocky appeal. Highly cloudy light
gold. Small bubbles lead to surprisingly solid lacing on the glass. Head is not
terribly long lasting. Wheats typically magnify their cloudiness and this is very
cloudy.
Aroma
Impressively strong, the wheat punches out with authority but there is much more
there. I also detect orange and lime citrus components, even a touch of grape
and light spice. Great aroma. Strong wheat that is clean along with plenty of
lemon zest. Pleasant with a touch of salt. Subtle sweetness. Some qualities
reminiscent of popcorn.
Palate
Very crisp carbonation, good wheat, a slight orange citrus, and clean water feel.
Very pleasant, initially a touch lighter than expected but quite tasty. Crisp, lightly
sweet, and flavorful. This brew calls itself a Belgian style but it seems to me to be
more German. Springtime in a glass, much more malty than your standard wheat
beer.
Finish
Strength picks up nicely with delicious wheat and spice and some of the sweet
orange citrus carries through. In my opinion this beer is perfectly balanced. A
good balance of wheat, sugar, and citrus. Refreshing and substantive. Full flavor
but delicate in the approach and memorable in the finish. A fun wheat beer.
Synopsis
Impressive, a little on the lighter side, but still impressive. The wheat has decent
strength and the blending of wheat, citrus sweet, and spice is delicious. Easy
drinking and tasty, I would recommend to any wheat beer fan. Very drinkable and
versatile. Wheat is the star but with much more going on. Belgian yeast and
somewhat of an Altbier character, I would recommend this to both wheat ale and
wheat lager enthusiasts.
