This one is Big, Black and Sweet ! It's malty character is derived from two
caramel malts along with Munich malt to create the smoothest High-Gravity beer
this side of the "pond".
Atwater Block Brewery, Detroit, MI        www.atwaterbeer.com
Appearance
Attractive, dark brown to black, a vivid crimson when held to a light. Has no
cloudiness and a decent effervescence. Head is beige in color, stands tall,
maintains a creamy character with mild lacing on the glass.
Beautiful rocky tall
head that is a dark beige to match the composition of the beer. Pronounced
lacing in this dark ruby red monster.

Aroma
Decent strength, dark malt and dark chocolate along with controlled alcohol
tones and a hint of lime citrus sweet.
A surprising crispness to what would
otherwise be a very malty sweet roast dopplebock. Everything one would expect
plus some extras. Full bodied and excellent.

Palate
Very smooth at first, maybe too smooth as the carbonation zest is just barely
there. This beer quickly improves however with pleasant dark malt flavors, a bit
of dark chocolate, and a bit of lime citrus sweet.
This lager type beer graduates
step by step. Has a malty sweetness of rich cereal grain, stands up to any
German variety and adds depth with alcohol notes to an already solid platform.

Finish
Gains intensity, the dark malt takes over with an unexpected roasted coffee
component. Additional flavors alternate in the background, more dark chocolate,
a dulled hop, some lime citrus, and very well controlled, albeit strong alcohol
tones. Leaves a faint warming sensation.
Some bitterness creeps in the mix
over the sweetness to cap the experience. A robust and complete dopplebock
with an extra roast element not found in most dopplebocks.

Synopsis
A tasty beer that I enjoyed.  Full dark malt and dark chocolate flavors, and well
controlled but potent alcohol at 9.5% ABV. Make no mistake, I will enjoy this
again, but it is not a pure bred dopplebock. This steps outside the box with an
additional roasted malt and coffee component. The flavor profile has alot of
"porter character", delicious but hurting the score a bit since we rate per style.
An
ambitious variant from a brewery that is relatively new to me. The smokiness
and hop additions are not per style but are much appreciated to round out the
utter power of this mega-bock-lager !
