Belgian Ale List

Quadrium Ale.  Traditional top-fermented and bottle-conditioned amber special
ale.
Appearance
Color is a light brown under normal viewing with orange copper hue viewed under
a light. Beer has some cloudiness and solids which is forgiven because the beer
is advertised as bottle-conditioned like most Belgians. Head is awesome, cream
colored and softly rocky, long lasting, don't pour this one too quickly.
Light red
amber, almost orange in color. Cloudiness is present as would be expected for a
bottle-condition Belgian ale. Very positive traits, appealing appearance.

Aroma
Strength of aroma is outstanding. Very multi-dimensional with an entire basket of
fruity tones - apple, pear, cherry, and some lime. Some saltiness scent was
detected but less than expected for this style of beer.
Champagne-like crisp
sourness. Floral and very spicy, not a surprise for an 11.0 ABV ale. I thought the
alcohol scent would destroy the remainder of the aroma but the alcohol smell is
hidden somewhat. Apple and richer fruits such as dates are there giving the beer
a complex aromatic profile.

Palate
Some of the fruitiness and saltiness is immediately noticed but the initial taste
was surprisingly thin for the style and the anticipation based on the aroma.
Sweet
with Brandy tones. Slight saltiness adds additional body. This is not very
dissimilar to many other Belgian ales I have tried over the years. Light tea-like
elements add to the complexity. Alcohol cuts the creamy quality and helps add to
the enjoyment of this ale.

Finish
A strong finish, maltiness and fruit flavors burst out, wrapped up with a mild salty
character and very warming as the 11% ABV would suggest. This beer is very
balanced in the fruity / salty sense.
Warming and disarming, a bit on the sweet
side. There is a lot going on in the beer but oddly it is a little mild in the end for so
powerful of an ale.

Synopsis
An enjoyable example of a Belgian ale with strong alcohol and warming quality.
Not much negative to say except this is not my favorite of the Urthel line. The flavor
components are almost too balanced, maybe cancelling enough of each other
out to make this too mild. Unexpected mildness is not a positive here as most
Belgian ales really grab you with character. I would say this tastes great but is too
calm in its presentation.
Opened immediately it is already a mature beer but save
this one and it is bound to improve with age. I actually feel that this may be
Urthel's best product. Not something to drink while operating heavy machinery.
Take the phone off the hook, kick back and sip a very good Belgian Brew.
