Porter List

Appearance
Dark black until held to a light, then it has a black central core and is a dark
reddish brown everywhere else. The head is a medium tan, medium height,
moderately lasting, and stays creamy in texture. Lacing is thick, completely coats
the glass. Very dark brown with plenty of rosy sheen. Potent looking...viscous stuff
relative to style. Beige foamy head with very sticky lacing. Bound to be a monster !
Aroma
Strong, the alcohol predominates with a strong whiskey-like scent. This is
followed by a sharp tangy lime citrus and then the roasted malt is noticed. Roasty
and sweet with a hint of melon. A powerful warm alcohol with dark caramels and
coffee. Potent and rich.
Palate
Full in flavor, strong sweet orange and lime citrus with the requisite roasted malt
flavor. Almost syrupy quality overflowing with rich coffee, toffee, and smoke flavor.
A dark coffee and sweetness in the forefront, chocolate crystal malts lend plenty
of sweet to a heavily roasted flavor.
Finish
Strength swells and the strong roasted malt finally takes over while the tangy
sweet remains and some light chocolate flavor enters the picture. Has the strong
warming alcohol tones suggested by the aroma. Warming sweet....all the way.
Stronger roast than most, having so much in solution this porter is border-line
chewy. Chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts.
Synopsis
Definitely a porter, though one more on the sweet side than most. Tangy and
sweet citrus, deep roasted malt, and a light chocolate with stronger than usual
alcohol tones throughout. A draft example of an American uber-porter. A powerful
brew that is strong even for the style. As advertised.
Note: Barley's does not bottle this porter, it is available at one of their two "ale
houses" in the Columbus, OH area and the draft can be bought in half gallon
jugs as shown.
Our newest offering is now on tap! It's an "imperial porter." We've put a twist on our
hugely popular porter, Ivan Porter, by turbocharging it. Fittingly, we call it Twisted
Ivan Double Porter. We believe it's the strongest porter in America, clocking in at
11.0% ABV. Never too much of a good thing when it comes to beer, eh?
