Brown Ale List

Appearance
Dark brown as it should be, a dark lustrous red when held to a light, effervescent
and clear. Head is light tan in color, medium height, and plenty of character.
Crowns in the center, stays creamy in texture, lacing on the glass is light. Dark
reddish brown and a head that jumps out of the glass. I see a little cloudiness
but the redeeming qualities out weigh the negatives.
Aroma
Good strength for the style, dark sweet malt, some chocolate, a touch of
nuttiness, and very light pear-like citrus. Controlled balance of roasty sweet, light
fruit, and some caramel and fig in solution. A little hardness to the water.
Palate
Creamy on the roof of the mouth, and crisp on the tongue. A very smooth dark
malt with a very muted light sweet. Light but within the norm for the brown ale
style. A dry bite as the light chocolate subsides, the ale takes a left turn from the
aroma. A true brown ale but a little on the light side. Has a noteworthy residual
hop crispness.
Finish
Malt strength picks up but sweetness is almost completely gone. Has a bit of a
dark chocolate tone but again there is not much sweet. A dulled but real hop
presence is noted and may be hiding some of the other flavors. Finishes just a
touch on the "dirty" side. The spiciness comes through with a sort of dirtiness to
an already tart finish. Thirst-quenching and drinkable but the flavors get a bit
cluttered at the end.
Synopsis
A decent brown ale, starts with dark malt, a light pear citrus, and light nuttiness.
The sweetness is very subdued by the dull hop content which are held in
balance itself (no real bite to the beer). Overall good but on the lighter side and
the level of hop takes it slightly outside the box for a brown ale style. This ale has
some good qualities but overall a bit of a let down. It drinks like a draft and is
definitely in an English-like brown ale category but I would have liked more
consistency throughout.
Abita Brewing Company, LLC, Abita Springs, LA
Abita's Turbodog is a dark brown ale brewed with a combination of pale, crystal
and chocolate malts, dry-hopped with the finest Willamette hops, and fermented
using a unique German alt yeast. Each batch is hand crafted using the pristine
artesian waters of Abita Springs, Louisiana, resulting in a rich body and color,
and a sweet-chocolate-toffee like flavor. Guided by our principle of "quality before
quantity," Turbodog is cold filtered and brewed in small batches using no
additives or preservatives. Like all of our beers, Turbodog is prepared with the
attention to detail upon which we have built our reputation as one of the country's
finest breweries.
