Our IPA List
Sierra Nevada Torpedo Ale is a big American IPA, perfectly balanced yet full of
flavor and aromas highlighting the complex citrus, pine and herbal character of
whole-cone American hops.
Appearance
A nice copper tone, effervescent, has some sediment-like cloudiness. Head is
tall and off-white in color. Head develops a chunky and foamy character as it sits.
Head has a decent duration but lacing is light. Nice looking pour, an attractive
amber that is well carbonated. Head is off-white and rocky for the IPA style.
Aroma
Respectable aroma strength, complex with sweet malt, both and orange and a
lime citrus, and a powerful yet balanced pine-like hop note. Overall impressively
balanced and strong. Fresh bouquet of hop with plenty of citrus...orange, lemon,
and lime. Piny and spicy with a little warmth.
Palate
Starts off very flavorful. Crispy carbonated but also has a creamy mouthfeel. Light
sweet malt and orange citrus and the hops are starting to chime in. Silky smooth
with a rough edge provided by the hop. A contrast of lightly roasted barley with the
acid of the hop interweaves throughout drinking. A little sweetness is also
delivered.
Finish
The hops stampede in with authority ! The piny flavor pushes the sweet to the
side. The hops take over from here so there is no mistaking this one, you are
having an IPA. At the very end the hoppy notes present with an orange peel bitter
that resonates for awhile. The punch of the hop holds steady and turns the beer
to a dry side but still thirst quenching. Full-flavored this is a satisfying brew for the
hop-head in you.
Synopsis
An impressive IPA and its no surprise that Sierra Nevada would do well with this
style. Full aroma, full flavor..citrus, malt, piny hop, and an orange-peel bitter. A
good distinct and definitive example of the IPA style. Plenty of hop bite for the IPA
lover but it does stop short of completely murdering the tastebuds with hop and
this is appreciated. A great example of an American IPA. The extra hop is good
and is not overbearing. Has a big IPA bite but it is not simply one note, complex
and good. One of the better American examples that I have tried.
