Beer Blitz Rater Comments
TITAN IPA is a big, aggressively hopped India Pale Ale brewed for hop disciples.
It starts out with piney hop aromas and citrus hop flavors, and finishes with a nice
rich, malty sweetness that is balanced with crisp hop bitterness. Suggested Food
Pairings: Grilled halibut, Thai curry, strong/soft cow's milk cheeses.
Appearance
A nice medium to dark copper with brown tones. Effervescent and initially clear.
Held to a light it is a bright copper color and falling from the head is a cloudiness
that eventually permeates the entire glass. Head is tall, off-white in color, long
lasting, and develops into a nice rocky character with heavy lacing. Light summer
tea color - brown to amber. A great expressive and lasting head, light lacing. A
little sediment that can be overlooked in an overall mildly cloudy brew.
Aroma
Very aromatic, strong hop as an IPA should have, but well balanced with a sweet
malt and an orange and a lime citrus. The prevailing scent is a piney hop
suspended in a good balance. Potent hop aroma subsides after initial sampling
to include grapefruit and a sweetness reminiscent of pineapple. Subtle sweet
immersed in a sea of bold hop. Crisp with a tannin-like tartness.
Palate
Crisp but yet also creamy. Clean and good with a light sweet malt, citrus, and
hoppiness fading in slowly. Creamy and spicy. A little different from most other
IPA's. Good presence of sweet to counteract the top heavy hop. Citrus and spice
abound and there is even a toasty chocolate note, a lot going on here.
Finish
Strength picks up as the rest of the hops come waltzing in, not with a hard kick
but rather a playful one. The creamy mouth feel picks up as well. Very balanced,
extremely strong hops are there but have been smoothed out around the edges
by a good bit of sweet malt and citrus. Hops kick in a bit more at the very end and
in the aftertaste. Not a sensory overload but still an IPA that grabs. The tart
spiciness in the forefront gives one a perception of an autumn or winter
seasonal. A lot of hidden qualities come out such as a burnt orange and Earl
Grey tea flavor.
Synopsis
A very impressive IPA in my view..absent the mysterious cloudiness that faded in.
Head was spectacular, and so was the flavor. Plenty of hop zest, citrus, orange
peel, all well balanced as advertised by the sweet malt and creamy mouth feel.
There are plenty of hop notes to satisfy the sharp hop head yet enough balance to
make this drinkable by anyones standard. I really like this IPA. It's challenging to
rate and fun to drink with all of its hidden components and unusual texture.
Certainly hop heavy as expected but thankfully not a one note beer. My favorite of
the Great Divide line to date.
