Appearance
Relatively attractive reddish orange brown, effervescent with a light and evenly
dispersed cloudiness. Head is medium to short height and medium duration.
The head is light beige and creamy, the lacing on the glass is there but it is
minimal.
Uniform light or medium brown that shines rubyish. A very sturdy brew that
suffers from moderate cloudiness. Short head with little lacing, has a sugary
look when swirled in the glass.
Aroma
Has a nice strong aroma, a sweet caramel malt, and light honey and cherry
scent. Also has strong but pleasant alcohol tones, some clove and hop spice.
A multi-Belgian style ale. Full and fruity with a yeasty character. A definite
seasonal that is dense and nutty in the aroma profile. Sweet alcohol tones and a
little dark cherry and over ripe fruit.
Palate
full flavored right away, has both a crisp carbonation and a mildly creamy mouth
feel, flavor is a tangy and sweet malt and cherry citrus.
A sweet nutty and tangy menagerie. Different from other Christmas brews
because the spice isn't the main feature. One of the many distinguishing notes
is the sourness of the cherry. It is able to cut through a heavy honey sweet.
Lightly salty and even a bit peppery, a complete meal.
Finish
Grows some end strength with more malt and then the add-in's takeover with a
lot of honey and cherry flavors finally wrapping up with a very mild spice and a
stronger but well-controlled alcohol warming.
This is a very big and powerful brew. That being said, it finishes gently with a
sour cider like quality due to the cherry. Definitely a Christmas brew that is more
beer than brandy. The alcohol will sneak up on you but this is one you might
want more than one of, it simply keeps building.
Synopsis
I must say this beer is as advertised. I am not the biggest fan of Christmas ales
but this one is probably my favorite so far in that category. Sweet caramel malt,
full flavored cherry, honey, and mild spice, along with strong but well-controlled
alcohol tones and warming for the winter months.
Like a neutron star this brew seems to collapse upon itself by its sheer weight
but then each sip renews the cycle. I could say with a blindfold on this is a
Troeg's brew, but it is certainly at the far end of the spectrum.
A cheerful creation to warm your heart and enlighten your tongue. Fermented
and aged with a spicy yeast, This ruby red beer delivers subtle cherries and
enticing aromas. The Mad Elf, a jolly and delicious beer for the Holidays.
Holiday Cheers Chris and John.
