Porter List
SAINT BRIDGET'S PORTER is an elegant, smooth porter that brims with the
coffee and chocolate characteristics of dark barley malts. Saint Bridget was a
patron Saint of Ireland, known for the epic miracle of transforming her bathwater
into beer for thirsty clerics. Suggested food pairings: Rosemary roasted
chicken, seared scallops, grilled beef, hearty stews.
Great Divide Brewing Co., Denver, CO
Appearance
A dark brown to black, a dark reddish brown and clear when held to a light. Light
to medium tan head, decent in height and duration. A mildly rocky character
develops as it sits. Lacing on the glass is excellent. Good initial head, soft and
bubbly with good lacing. Color of the beer is an expected dark brown with hints of
red. A delicate looking porter.
Aroma
Hints of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt with some mild alcohol tones. The
composition is great but overall I would have preferred more strength in the
aroma. Clear malt and relative roast. This porter expresses some other scent
notes...a little copper, melon, and a subtle whiskey.
Palate
Roasted malt flavor is nice but very mild. Some chocolate and coffee flavors are
also there. Just a bit thin in mouthfeel. Chocolate and coffee are the tipping off
point to a clean porter. Seems like there is a bit of rye introduced to balance a
sweet porter.
Finish
I would call this a 3-D porter, light roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee flavors. A
good porter with a criticism being that it lacks a little strength and complexity. A
welcome bitter rounds out a relatively light porter example. Has some harder
coffee notes and the chocolate makes its exit as semi-sweet.
Synopsis
A nice flavorful porter, roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee...the requisite base
porter components. Not bad but not spectacular either due to its mildness that
carried throughout. This porter has some overall elegance with a subtle sweet
and a balancing coffee bitter. A quality beer but an overall light example of the
porter style.
