Sprecher Maibock bottle cap
Sprecher Maibock in a lager or pilsner style glass
Sprecher Brewing Co., Glendale, WI
Additional dry hopping gives this blonde bock a distinctive flowery aroma and
crisp hop flavor. This traditional Springtime lager is aged throughout the cold
winter months to develop its robust character.
Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
Medium copper color with just a touch of cloudiness, even a bit dark for a
maibock style. The beer itself is inviting but the off-white head is thin and
dissipates rather quickly.
Cloudy light amber to dark golden lager color.
Moderately carbonated, short quickly dissipating head. Some viscosity, a step
above thin, enticing overall appearance.

Aroma
Nice strength, contains all the definitive maibock style elements. Sweet malt,
graininess, mild hops, and alcohol tones. Something extra noticed, basically an
apple scent.
Pronounced sweet maltiness. A coppery water element. Some
cereal and alcohol tones. Light hop and salt, leaves one curious to do more
investigating.

Palate
Full flavored, mild creaminess, heavy sweet and light malt, a good level..not
syrupy. Once again true to the definitive style with an extra twist. Hops are mild
but there is a touch more hop over many maibocks, more than expected but well
controlled.
Wow, very unique. Salty, malty, some vinegar...interesting. Full bodied
with sweet malt and even some sours. Barley and a little toasted wheat perhaps
? Creamy with a little hop sting, there is a lot going on here but the beer rounds
out well.

Finish
Enhanced mild creaminess, heavy sweet malt, heavy grains, light hops, some
apple cider quality and a hint of salt. The hops do not cancel or balance the
sweetness as much as simply blending nicely in the background. This beer is on
the sweet side as one would expect for the style.
Complete and heavy in a good
way. A full array of ingredients. Bocks and maibocks are known for this, but not to
such a degree. Finishes like a Russian or Baltic lager with a dab of salt and sour
thrown in.

Synopsis
I was glad to experience this fine example of the increasingly difficult to find
maibock style. All the definitive flavors of the style are there along with some mild
hop and apple "extras". Another impressive American version of a German
developed style. Sweet malt, mild hop, mild alcohol warmth, and a touch of
apple. Just a bit more punch could have propelled the score higher but it didn't
need it. In the Beer Blitz "A List" which is not an easy task. This one will see the
inside of my fridge again.
I have tried many lagers and bocks, but this one is truly
different. Relatively low alcohol but you wouldn't know it, it does have some
punch. I would like to drink this accompanied by a dish. The style is a regional
specialty and for that and other reasons its fun to drink.
