Southampton Altbier bottle cap
Southampton Altbier in a standard pint beer glass
Brewed and served in the house that beer built. Most folks from the Northeast go
to Florida when November arrives. But not the Southampton brewmaster, Phil
Markowski. Back in 1995, Phil headed to Dusseldorf, Germany to taste the
famous altbiers of the region. "Alts" are unique: less fruity than most ales but with
the crisp drinkability of a lager. So what did Phil bring back from his trip ?
Authentic German ingredients and a recipe for altbier that will surprise your
senses. One taste and you'll be happy that Phil decided not to go to Florida, too.
Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
Very nice copperish brown tone, a little darker than expected but wonderful. Very
clear, decent effervescence. Off-white head was full, initially creamy, picks up a
rocky character as it sits, even better than the picture.
Good rosy amber color.
Outstanding lacing on a staying rocky head. Well carbonated despite a heavier
consistency.

Aroma
Nice and strong, as fruity as the best ales, some orange citrus, cherry, and grape,
has both sour and sweet fruit tones. Mild trailing grains and malts, very inviting,
not very hoppy at all.
Nice light fruitiness with notes of plum and clover honey. A lot
of elements here, some hard to pinpoint. The aroma is also a bit like tea.

Palate
Fresh water taste yet also a somewhat creamy mouth feel. Smooth with an initially
subdued sweet malt, fruity, and grainy flavor. Nice.
Soft and dry. The fruity essence
takes a back seat to a softly toasted malt flavor. A well crafted beer that balances
well.

Finish
All palate flavors explode in intensity along with moderately strong but dulled hop
and grainy notes.
Consistent dry and full-flavored tea flavors. The ale blossoms
into a fuller mouth finish.

Synopsis
Nice and enjoyable. True to what it is supposed to be - an "Alt" which is a special
subset of the ale category that bridges the gap between a pure ale and a pure
lager. This beer presents the altbier style very well, some fruity and toasty ale
qualities, and a drinkability of a lager.
Southampton is quietly climbing up my
personal list of favorite microbreweries. The beers are well made but sometimes
fall into their own categories. I don't know if I see this as a pure "alt" example as
my fellow raters but I could drink a lot of this beer, and probably will.
