Porter List

Appearance
A great Porter appearance, black with no light getting through. Head is a med.
dark tan, tall, thick, creamy, a little chunky, long lasting, and this porter has
excellent lacing on the glass. Dark for even a porter, and more importantly, the
proper body for a porter. Fluffy beige to brown head impresses as well.
Aroma
Decent strength overall, full but not overbearing roasted malt., coffee, nutty, and
woody scents, some alcohol tones and just a pinch of tanginess. Complex array
of components. Strong coffee to expresso with some interesting hop spice and
floral notes. Just a bit of mild sweet to offset a powerful roast.
Palate
Great strength level, a penetrating and tasty roasted malt, just a touch of
tanginess, not much sweet, with a bit of carbonation and a bit of creaminess. A
solid grainy coffee with chocolate and licorice. Robust as the name implies. The
balance is slightly off-kilter but good as a whole. Strong character for a porter that
is both silky and chalky in mouthfeel.
Finish
The palate to finish transition is as smooth as silk. The deep roasted gives up
some ground for a delicious black coffee flavor and interesting wood tones, not
whiskey barrel wood, just wood. There is a hint of chocolate in the background
but no significant sweetness to speak of. Rich but growingly dry. The brew loses
its silkiness and thins out a bit. A nice bouquet of flavors remains despite the
change in texture.
Synopsis
Absolutely wonderful. If you want to experience a porter you really can't go wrong
here. A ton of deep roasted malt, coffee, woody flavors. Has almost a complete
absence of sweetness but that is not a detriment to the porter style. I found the
bottle label ugly, but don't judge this beer by its cover ! I liked this porter and any
general porter fan should also. We are just beginning to experience the
Smuttynose brewery but I imagine they excel in darker brews.
