Appearance
Beautiful pale golden color. Nice and clear. Head is a rocky and white but not very
tall and not long lasting. Clear effervescent golden. Nice head of moderate
duration. Good carbonation, flows through the beer which seems to be more
dense than a typical pilsner.
Aroma
Strong aroma presence as I like it to be. Very floral and also fruity with hints of
cherry, lemon, and lime. Also a very faint hint of chocolate. Aroma is very inviting, it
is atypical of a pilsner in that there is a lot more present than one would expect
from a pilsner beer. Full, fruity, and light oak characteristics. Sweetness is
reminiscent of clover and honey. A very slight alcohol nose. Complex and
satisfying for so soft of a beer. Could use more hop presence.
Palate
Crisp and clean, also with some sweetness noticed right away. A very mild
chocolaty flavor, and a whisper of a creamy mouth feel. Obviously not
characteristic of a pilsner but more like a pilsner / bock hybrid. We do not have a
hybrid category but this would belong there if we did. Soft, sweet, delicate, and
easy drinking. Standard dry hopping as expected for a pilsner style coupled with a
stronger than usual malt presence. More creamy than dry. Quality composition in
taste but I must be critical of calling this on a pils.
Finish
Picks up just a little more strength, still soft. Some grainy taste along with more
chocolate and citrus flavor. Wraps up with a good but faint hop zing. Definitely on
the sweet side and a bit warming. Again there is a mix of bock and pilsner
character. Hops in the finish add to the beers roundness but are a little lacking in
bite. Sweetness is sustained throughout the beer. Tasty and complex but
confusing and out of sync with the pilsner style.
Synopsis
Enjoyable to drink but difficult to rate because this beer is a mix of the Pilsner and
Bock style. Beer Blitz rates relative to style meaning this would need hurt
somewhat on scoring regardless of the category it was put in. It was just barely
bumped down however for the following reasons: 1. It is as advertised if you read
the entire label - Uber Pils indicated largely on the front, and "golden bock lager"
in the smaller print of the label. 2. The awesome flavor makes this beer deserve a
spot on our "A" list which it received. My advice is that if you have not previously
tried a pilsner or bock beer start with a more "pure bred" example of each to get a
feel for the style. If you like one or both of those styles then definitely get this one,
you will find it tasty, clever, and fun. I definitely intend to buy this one again and
again. The front of the beer label suggest the consumer is buying a pilsner but
they are not. It does remark on the bottle that it is a lager/bock beer in addition to
"Uber Pils". It is a light example of a good summertime beer to be served at low
temperatures. I'm torn.....the beer tastes good but is a hybrid of styles so it can't
score perfectly in either category. It would probably be better classified as a
Maibock in which it would have probably received around the same score.
