This stout is entirely handmade, in the "old world" tradition, using only the finest
barley malts, whole hops, brewers yeast and water.
Appearance
Dark black as it should be, a little red shows around the edges when held to a
light. Head was amber, rocky, and decent in duration, just a bit lacking compared
to some other stouts available. Typical blackness true to any good stout. Nice
rocky head, an attractive brew.
Aroma
Decent strength. Spiciness noted along with roasted malt. Has a touch of a dark
chocolate scent but overall aroma suggests this beer will not be on the sweet
side. Nice roasted barley with some floral/fruit hints give this beer some
complexity. A little alcohol tinge is present to give this a well rounded aromatic
quality. Hops and spiciness is also present.
Palate
Thin in mouth feel but pleasant with a mild roasted flavor, very balanced as
suspected, hints of spice, not bitter and not sweet, but balanced. Hops come
through more than the typical stout and in a good way. You also get the requisite
amount of roasted malt that defines the stout style. Some sweetness is present
in the background. All in all a very good stout and Sierra Nevada is commended
for doing something a bit out of the ordinary.
Finish
Excellent, roasted malt flavor gains in intensity. Maintains its balance, not really
sweet, not really bitter. A strong roasted flavor that is enjoyable but it is of a one
dimensional nature. A touch of a bite from the hops, different and less dry. I
wouldn't describe as creamy but it coats the tongue well.
Synopsis
A good stout as expected from Sierra Nevada. A quality and consistency from one
six pack to the next can not be denied. Refreshing and enjoyable, with a criticism
being it is one dimensional and I would call a "stout light". The lager or bock
drinker that has not experienced a stout would find this beer to be a good entry
into the style without too much shock to their system. This is an American stout. It
is a bit different, and I appreciate the departure. Thin in mouth feel but without
sacrificing a strong flavor. Good for the first time stout drinker or one in the mood
for something a little lighter that maintains an essence of a stout.
