Appearance
Very dark reddish brown tint. Clear, no cloudiness at all. Terrific amber head of
sufficient duration, particularly for a lager style. Rich and dark, superior to many
dark lagers. Slight room for improvement but not much.
Aroma
Wow, very strong and pleasant aroma. Scents easily detected without
concentrated effort. Very malty with some chocolate tones. To reiterate, the
strongest lager aroma I can recall. Maybe the strongest attribute of the beer. Very
malty but no overly so. This could pass for a Russian beer minus the subtle
crispness.
Palate
Very mild and pleasant. mild chocolate, mild carbonation, just a bit light even
relative to style. Nice and drinkable in any situation. A little thin, as it quickly
separates on the tongue. The aroma components are noticed. No
disappointments but missing a component that could transform it from good to
great.
Finish
Stronger than the palate (as usual). Good chocolate malty flavor. Full flavor
strength (lager level). Contains no bite, no bitterness, technically it is correct for a
lager to lack those traits. The beer flows, no pun intended. It is what it is and its
good. Consistent with its palate, lacks slightly in carbonation but enough is there
for that to be overlooked.
Synopsis
Very good, smooth and drinkable dark lager. Hops are barely noticed if at all.
Definitely well on the sweet side but not syrupy or grossly so. Solid example of a
dark lager. Unique in that roasted barley qualities give the drinker chocolate and
peat flavors that one could find in a Scottish ale.
