Appearance
Awesome appearance, medium to dark brown, reddish copper tones when held
to a light. No cloudiness at all. Head is an off-white to light tan, lasting and rocky
in character. A perfect appearance in my view. Nice effervescent red copper. Slight
rockiness to head. Well carbonated and medium to light viscosity. Soft rockiness
in head develops as the ale sits.
Aroma
Smell is pleasing but weaker than I prefer. Detected sweet malt, peat, citrus, and
smoky accents with just a whisper of a whiskey tone. Light malty sweetness.
Caramelized sugars with light bitter hop provide a good blend. Inviting but mild
compared to other Scotch Ales available.
Palate
Light and clean, some malt flavor and mild smoke flavors. Pleasing but again too
light for the style. Very light, a little thin for the style. Bite of hop is more bitter than
necessary and hides the malt. Roasted elements and a hint of oak tones exist.
Finish
More malt and smoky taste along with an interesting tangy lime peel. Extremely
mild but noticeable hop zing. Still more on the light thin side than expected. More
crisp than creamy with bitterness. Surprisingly dry, some sugar malt and
traditional Scotch Ale exists.
Synopsis
Pleasant easy drinking beer but probably too light for the discriminating Scotch
Style ale drinker. I would have preferred more sweetness and strength. An OK
example, clearly designed to appeal to the more mainstream lager drinker. Clean
and refreshing but lacking in character and overall mouth feel. A good middle of
the road ale, probably with broad appeal but not the best example of the style.
