Appearance
Very attractive, a deep brown and gold copper tone with an impressive sheen.
Head was impressive, light tan in color, soft and creamy instead of rocky but solid
and lasting for this style. Beautiful red amber with light carbonation and staying
power in the head. Light lacing and clear and inviting appearance. Full bodied for
an Octoberfest entry, very good. Could use an additional element in the
carbonation to push it to a perfect score here.
Aroma
Decent strength, sweet and malty with a caramel scent. There is also a light
presentation of the noble hops. Sweet with a light roast on the malt. Traditional
Sam Adams hop is an elevating addition. Barley is the star with a lot of subtle
aromas of citrus, vanilla, and anise. Surprisingly a little alcohol as a bottom end.
Palate
Crisp, sweet malt and a caramel essence as the aroma suggested. Some
graininess and very subdued noble hop flavor which is appropriate for this style of
beer. Clean, silky, and creamy on the palate. Flavors are delicate in the sense
that they are all back notes. Water, grain, hop, and yeast are the bread and
butter. Full flavor with some sweetness, not overly exciting but good.
Finish
Grows in intensity but the caramel flavor mellows to more of a general malt
sweetness. This is welcomed and appropriate for the style. Graininess develops
itself nicely and proper for the style the sweetness is slightly muted with a little
hop presence. Finishes soft with no harshness or extremes. Satisfying with the
textbook Sam Adams hop "bite" as a subdued presentation.
Synopsis
A respectable presentation of the Oktoberfest style. Sweet lager qualities but not
overdone. Caramel flavors add some uniqueness. The always expected Samuel
Adam noble hop blend is there but is fittingly muted for the style. The caramel
essence takes this a bit outside the norm, for better or worse, you decide. This is
one of Samuel Adams best blends. Our raters talked about how you can pick out
any Sam Adams blindfolded due to the noble hop blend present in all Sam Adams
styles. This one is no different even if maybe milder on the hop presentation. In
comparison it is a terrific non-traditional hopped Octoberfest. A criticism would be
that it could have used a little bit more adventure.
