Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Milton, DE
A deep mahogany ale brewed with Belgian beet sugars, green raisins & a
sense of purpose.
Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
Absolutely beautiful, medium dark with touches amber, copper, mahogany
brown, gold, and some reddish tones. The color itself is multi-dimensional and
there is no cloudiness to speak of. The head is light and off-white in color, has a
rocky appearance, and is long lasting. Beautiful, very dark amber, not exactly
mahogany as described, but who cares ? Clean and bubbly with a high quality
champagne-like head. No cloudiness whatsoever.
Aroma
Fruity and sweet, the raisin comes through along with a hint of green apple. The
only criticism is that I would have preferred more strength. Drinking at low
temperatures which slightly censors the nose. Still sour fruit aroma comes
through with subtle malt. Pleasant, crisp, and alive.
Palate
Very lightly creamy, medium sweetness, and very smooth. A perfect carbonation
balance, not too crisp or too thin. A bit of a pleasant tartness is noticed. Just a
little more fullness and this category would have had a perfect score. A different
experience from the aroma. Rich with soft nutty tones. A perfect farmish quality.
Let me explain, this compares with small-batch Belgian beers in that it is well
conceived, a great experience from the first sip.
Finish
Multi-dimensional flavors awaken. Grainy, raisin sweet, and mild salty tones
dance around the taste buds. Alcohol content is not absent but controlled so it is
smooth and refreshing. Great feel throughout the mouth and sinuses. Dry, but
not too dry, malty but not too malty, etc., etc. - This is a great beer.
Synopsis
Overall a great beer, pleasant tasting. I particularly like the uniqueness. At first I
was unsure of a beer made with raisins but this was a pleasant treat. I will buy
this one again and again. A broad range of character, one of my favorites in
recent memory. This beer contains many positive components. I nearly never talk
about yeast as it provides no direct flavor. Many Belgian styles use wild yeast
strains that affect the quality for better or worse, this one is perfected.
