Our IPA List
Racer 5 is an aggressive styled India Pale Ale. Handmade from a brewery
whose motto is "Bigger is Better". This golden, well hopped, bottle-conditioned
ale demands your attention. Try the next generation of I.P.A. Racer 5…Go..
Go..
Appearance
An orangish gold, yellowish gold when held to a light. Effervescent with mostly
forgiven cloudiness as this is advertised as bottled condition and the cloudiness
is evenly dispersed. Head is just barely off-white in color, medium height, with a
decent duration. Good thick lacing on the glass which is web-like. Cloudy
orange/gold that is unassuming. Short rocky head that laces well. This brew isn't
overly expressive but does appear to be sturdy with some character.
Aroma
Good strength here with pleasant but signature IPA hop notes nestled in with
some citrus orange and lime tones. Bold and zesty, not a salad dressing but I
wouldn't mind spilling some on some lettuce. Spice and fruit balance extremely
well in a solid blending of hops. Getting some pineapple citrus, one of the better
pure aromas in recent memory.
Palate
Flavorful immediately. As the aroma suggested, the strong IPA hop flavor is
there but is amazingly balance with orange and lime citrus sweet and zest. This
is both crisp and also lightly creamy, just overall very pleasant, especially for the
style. Big flavor that coats the tongue. Hop is paramount but not a singular note.
Plenty of sweet malt expertly interwoven into the lattice-work of taste. Sweet,
bitter, sour, and general boldness of flavors in unison.
Finish
An enhanced creamy mouth feel carries the finish, very nice for the IPA style. The
sweet citrus turns tangy and then the requisite IPA hop takes over in a strong but
expertly controlled fashion, no overly sharp edges here. The hop predominates
but the flavor alternates with the citrus and a bit of salt enters the mix. Not
dissimilar from the palate but with a tangier and rougher hop flavor which still
works as the sweet back notes remain.
Synopsis
A wonderfully strong yet easily drinkable IPA presentation. Strong enough for the
diehard IPA fan but blended enough for some that may find other IPA's too
sharp. I am very impressed with Bear Republic and the obvious care they take to
make excellent tasting beer. Bear Republic scores again with an impressive IPA
that is bitter and hoppy but also offers up much more. What impresses is its
ability to get its authoritative point across while maintaining a semblance of
balance.
