Wheat Lager List
Purple Haze is a crisp, American style wheat beer with a fresh raspberry puree
added after filtration. The result leaves a fruity raspberry presentation in the beer.
The premium raspberries provide the lager with a subtle purple coloration and
haze, a fruity aroma, acidity, and a tartly sweet taste. Each batch is handcrafted
using the pristine artesian waters of Abita Springs, Louisiana, resulting in a
crisp, refreshing brew. Guided by our principle of "quality before quantity", Purple
Haze is cold filtered and brewed in small batches using no additives or
preservatives. Like all of our beers, Purple Haze is prepared with the attention to
detail upon which we have built our reputation as one of the country's finest
breweries.
Abita Brewing Company, LLC, Abita Springs, LA
Appearance
Color is a pale cantaloupe melon color, maybe a hint of purple there with the
expected cloudiness for a wheat lager. Head was white, tall, lasting, and had a
creamy to chunky character with moderate lacing on the glass. Color is a light
gold, cloudy and well carbonated wheat beer. Fluffy white head to a relatively light
wheat.
Aroma
Moderate aroma strength. Two dimensional with the raspberry winning out over
the wheat in a ratio of around 65/35. Not an overbearing raspberry with wheat, a
light fruity hop nip, crisp and refreshing.
Palate
Very smooth, carbonation is very light, a clean water essence with very light
sweet raspberry and very light wheat flavors. Nice combination of textures, a dry
bitter tingle with a soft syrupy sweet. Raspberry with some lemon and slightly
coppery water.
Finish
Palate raspberry and wheat flavors gain strength but just barely, leaves a tangy
sensation on the tip of the tongue at the very end. Light sweetness backing itself
up in the finish, a balanced very light summer beer.
Synopsis
Two dimensional flavor, raspberry and wheat, but light and thin to a fault in my
view. The flavors are not bad but too weak giving a watery brew. This needed to
have more overall strength, hence the low rating. The raspberry is a good choice
for the wheat platform. A problem is the overall lightness of the product which
could be described as thin, very delicate this one.
