Pilsner Urquell Beer
Pilsner Urquell, Plzen, Czech Republic
The Original Pilsner
Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
A nice lustrous golden color, effervescent, no cloudiness, snow white head, rocky
and of decent duration for the style. A perfect Pilsner appearance in my view.
Beautiful clear gold with expressive carbonation. Holds head for a limited duration.
Thin and elegant. The beer is relatively fragile and perhaps suffers a little from a
rating standpoint. Very good overall.

Aroma
Decent strength, mostly grainy, faint hints of citrus sweetness. Aroma has a bit of
a "skunked" scent, typical when buying this here in Ohio, is the beer too delicate
to travel ? Perhaps.
Soft malty and hoppy nose, almost a wheat quality that I know
isn't technically there but a grainy nonetheless. Yeasty and sour with some
saltiness.

Palate
Initially clean, smooth, and soft. Pleasant grainy taste and mild sweetness with a
light carbonation feel.
Light and crisp with a soft malty quality. Tartness develops
in the mouth and supports a dry mouth feel. Lacking somewhat when compared to
modern counterparts but good.

Finish
Smoothness vanishes, grainy flavor with very faint citrus sweetness. These flavors
give way to a harshness, a bite that is somewhat sour and dirty in nature. Wraps
up with some bitter grapefruit peel flavor on the tongue.
Hops follow through to
round out a simple style. Sweetness is present but isn't detected until the end. The
blend of hops is unique to Urquell and I believe this is due to the region. These
hops tend to be significantly stronger.

Synopsis
Drinkable but not terribly impressive. Perhaps due to a Pilsners delicate nature
and the travel of this import. Maybe would even benefit from a brown bottle
instead of green. In any event, when bought in Ohio this beer has always had a
"skunked" and soured nature. There is a level of harshness that just does not
belong in the finish of a Pilsner.
Crisp and bold, yet soft and light, a complex irony.
This is the beer (arguably) that created the style...and thus should define it.
Temperature is a huge factor and given the choice , I prefer this one closer to
room temperature to unlock more malt components.
