Peg Leg Stout bottle cap
Peg Leg Stout in a standard pint beer glass
Clipper City Brewing Co. Baltimore, MA
Beware the pirate ! Our Peg Leg Imperial Stout is dangerously dark yet very
drinkable - with the luxurious character of roasted coffee and dark chocolate
Appearance
Good color, black as a typical stout under normal viewing. When held to a light
just a hint of red shows through. Nice rocky and lasting head. Interesting is the
color of the head, it is off-white to tan, much lighter than most stouts.
Standard
stout black. Some silky and soft qualities in head and pour, good carbonation.

Aroma
Pleasant, hints of roasted coffee and chocolate. General strength needed to be a
bit stronger for an Imperial Stout, hence the 22/25 score in this category.
Light
stout characteristics. Malt, chocolate, coffee, and some soft alcohol notes. A
unique pine-like aroma suggest there are hops but expected a stronger aroma.

Palate
Roasted malt character and a hint of chocolate. Amazingly smooth with significant
creaminess. Nothing unpleasant. Could use a bit more strength in the character
that is there.
Very silky for an Imperial Stout, but still not like a Milk Stout. Definite
chocolate and coffee tones along with citrus zest elements. An additional
complexity seems to be the presence of caramel as an undertone to balance the
hop content.

Finish
Roasted coffee predominates here, very tasty. Alcohol warmth comes through but
is not overbearing. Very enjoyable, still a bit mild for the style.
Pleasant and clean
for a complex beer. Has a standard amount of warmth. A little light but well
composed.

Synopsis
A great flavorful beer albeit mild for the Imperial Stout class that it is in. All of the
tastes present were good but I would have preferred more strength in all. Would
be great for someone who wants to experience stout taste but prefers a milder
beer. Also good for the drinker that does not like any bitterness because I did not
detect any bitterness in Peg Leg. Worth mentioning again, the color of the head is
amazingly light contrasted with the color of the beer, very interesting.
Full,
refreshing, and creamy mouth feel. Not my all time favorite but a fine example of
the style. Unique and enjoyable comparison to other stout examples.
