Appearance
Black as possible, no light will be getting through this stout. A tall medium dark
brown head with texture and a rocky character. Lacing is excellent. It's hard to find
fault with the appearance so I didn't.
Black, black, black, light can not escape.
Robust head full of character with plenty of lacing, Awesome !

Aroma
Wow, strong, no problem detecting this as it punches you in the nose. It leaves
no doubt that you are having an imperial stout. Strong roasted malt and strong
alcohol tones, interesting orange peel zest, and plenty of hops to satisfy.
Hoppy
and sweet, heavy roast and spice. The hops stand out but still balance well.
Powerful with a noteworthy sweet, complex spice, and fruit - lemon & orange,
all-spice, anise, and burnt sugar. Terrific all-around.

Palate
Moderate to full creaminess, deep roasted flavorful malt, and orange citrus
tanginess, and even some mild chocolate here.
Dry and chocolaty with heavy
coffee roast. Some peat, reminds one of scotch balanced with hop and sweet.
Bold...grabbing, very powerful with a monster bitter French roast element.

Finish
Boom, an already strong deep roast gets even stronger and this is good ! A
hoppiness picks up along with some coffee tones and very mild hint of chocolate,
wrapping up with a unique orange peel bitter and significant alcohol warming.
Dark and lasting. The roast on the malt takes no prisoners and imparts a strong
bitter. Chocolate and burnt coffee remain with an oddly good sweet condensed
milk component. Complex and interesting.

Synopsis
Very complex, deep roasted malt, coffee, hops, and an orange peel bitter all
present in an impressive full-flavored, full-bodied fashion with plenty of alcohol
warming. The final orange peel bitter makes this unique, this beer is sure to
leave the stout enthusiast well-satisfied.
An old favorite of mine, but not for the
weak at heart. It doesn't take much imagination to find the complexity and this one
may be a challenge for the walk-a-day drinker. This quality brew turned me on to
North Coast and the rest is a great beer drinking story.
