Speakeasy Old Godfather Barleywine head
SSSSHHH ! During Prohibition, the masses were forced underground into the
Speakeasy. Hidden within the streets of the city, Friends gathered where music
played and drinks were poured... Speakeasy's patriarch, OLD GODFATHER,
commands respect. Flanked by a potent arsenal of malt and a ruthless gang of
hops, it's simply a beer you can't refuse.
Speakeasy Ales & Lagers, San Francisco, CA   www.goodbeer.com
Appearance
A medium dark reddish brown, very cloudy with lots of flaky sediment. Not
unheard of for the style but not a given either. The head is a light tan only of
medium height but fine for a barleywine. The head stays foamy and creamy, has
a short duration, and lacing on the glass is light.
Very heavy sediment is the
stand-out quality here so...not much to look at. I'll give it a little bit of pass due to
the style. Color is a little lighter, more orange than most in this category. Has a
rocky caramel head with some lacing.

Aroma
Very strong aroma, bravo in this category ! Complex with sweet malt and citrus,
and a tangy citrus, components being pear, pineapple, red & green apples,
some honeydew melon, and a bit of orange. A huge basket of fruit inside of
swirling and pleasant alcohol tones trailed by some hefty balancing hop. A true
definitive barleywine aroma.
Powerful aroma, a solid product. Spicy and
warming with peach, apricot, and herb. A hot honey nose with good addition of
hop.

Palate
Strong and flavorful right away. The malty and citrus components are well mixed
in a fruit cocktail-like presentation but the sweet is held well in check by the hop.
Sweet and very spicy, smooth mouthfeel but with a pronounced acidic hop
content. Strong bitter acid and sweet honey battle throughout. This ale has a
duality that is exciting. Citrus zest, coriander, pine, lemon, and honey.

Finish
Wow, an already strong beer becomes the Incredible Hulk. Develops some
creamy character. The already held back fruit sweet is pushed to the back of the
line as an interesting array of prickly bitters dance with a sweet just present
enough to stop the hop from roughing you up too much. A Belgian-like saltiness
enters the picture and the alcohol tones and warming punch you in an enjoyable
way.
The bitter really punches through the syrupy aftermath to the tongue. A
multi-strain hop presence makes this interesting and enjoyable, really wakes up
the taste buds.

Synopsis
Wow, a true barleywine and a true "strong" beer. Old Godfather is an appropriate
name, this one is tough, complex, defines its own sense of "class", and obeys
no rules. Personally I love this barleywine style ale. A huge sweet fruit basket yet
less sweet than most barleywines with the complex hoppy bitters and alcohol
tones commanding your respect. Complex and strong, the way I love a beer to
be.
Some elements are reminiscent of a good "pumpkin brew". A cooling fruit
sweetness is intact and then a blast of hop. The hop was needed to balance the
big malt and citrus presence. This one really grew on me, I enjoyed it more the
more I drank it.
