Northwind Imperial Stout bottle cap
Northwind Imperial Stout in a standard pint beer glass
Beer Blitz Rater Comments
This deep dark delight harkens back to the days when such brews were shipped
to the Imperial Court of Russia. With a firm roasty maltiness balanced against a
generous helping of hops, Northwind has what it takes to stand up to the worst its
namesake can dish out ! Enjoy it by a roaring fire.

Appearance
Black on black, completely dark as a stout should be. Head is a medium dark
tan, impressively tall and lasting. Head is thick in appearance, it looks like a thick
chocolate milkshake. It picks up a small crater like texture, and a little chunky
rockiness if you let it sit long enough. Lacing on the glass is incredible.
Hyper-dark with a lasting gravelly head. Assertive and thick...a powerful looking
beer.

Aroma
Impressively complex, it won't blow your nose off in overall strength, but there is
alot going on here and no trait overshadows the other. A light roasted malt, light
smokiness, light orange citrus sweet, light chocolate, light spicy hops, and even
some light sour bitters.
Subtle in relation to style although I know the hops are
there. Won't knock you out but the expected flavor components are there...slight
sweet roasted malt, coffee, and some melon tones.

Palate
Good flavor fullness right off, mildly creamy mouth feel, good roasted malt, a
touch of chocolate, and some coffee flavors in an impressive mix with a light
tangy quality.
Creamy and warming...sweet and soft. The hops don't kick as they
are cloaked in a mass of malt. Nice light roast also, all relative to the Imperial
Stout style. Complex, yet subtle and controlled.

Finish
A good beer quickly gets better. The roasted malt rises to full strength, a slight
hoppy bite enters the fray and is joined by some chocolate, coffee, citrus sweet,
and an interesting tangy bitterness.
Creamy and warming. Has a nice pop but is
still quite relaxed. The bitter is a component but not a defining quality. Stays on
the tongue and is rich and rewarding with coffee, grain, and a little licorice.

Synopsis
A great stout...not my all-time favorite but still deserves to be called great.
Complex profile that stout drinkers appreciate - roast, citrus sweet, chocolate,
coffee, hops and interesting tangy bitters. A stout with some ESB and light pale
ale qualities.
Maybe the most drinkable in quantity of any Imperial Stout. A great
significant mix of flavors that mellow together. Don't store this one, drink it
immediately, its full but already well under control. Light for the style but full
flavored and terrific in its own way. Incredibly crafted.
