Lion Stout Bottle Cap
Lion Stout in a standard pint beer glass
The Lion Brewery, Biyagama, Sri Lanka
"…the stout was soft, fresh and quite delicious. This was the top fermenting Lion
Stout … It was bottle-conditioned and had an extraordinary chocolaty, mocha …
character." Michael Jackson, The Beer Hunter.
Appearance
A dark black but some red shows around the edges when held to a light. Decent
head, mostly smooth and creamy, light tan in color and of medium duration.
Dark
as India ink would be an appropriate description for this Sri Lanka beer. Tall,
lasting, rocky head. Little carbonation outside of head. Good texture in pour.

Aroma
Decent overall strength, surprising is the level of a sweet orange citrus aroma.
Has roasted malt, coffee, and a hint of chocolate tones chiming in. What is there
is good, would have preferred the strength of the non-citrus tones to be greater.
Has the chocolate maltiness and roast of a stout, coupled with a grainy cereal
quality. Full in nose with a velvety alcohol warmth coming through in the end.

Palate
Very crisp, clean, and smooth. A pleasant orange and coffee taste is immediately
noticed. A bit on the thin side for mouth feel.
Creamy and a soft richness. Cocoa
is a superior flavor to mix with standard malt. A departure for the day to day stout
consumer. A peat quality to the roast normally found in Scottish style ales, and a
hard water element that is difficult to explain.

Finish
More flavors awaken. The citrus quickly fades and pleasant roasted malt, coffee,
and chocolate flavors take over. The taste is a tad on the sweet side. Absolutely
no bitterness or spiciness detected. A bit thin in mouth feel but clean and good.
Creamy and strong chocolate nose. Does well to coat the tongue and provide
some warmth without destroying the senses. This stout is somewhat mild
compared to other stouts.

Synopsis
Great flavor even if a bit on the thin side. Shockingly smooth and easy drinking for
an 8% ABV Stout, even thirst quenching. Alcohol is well hidden but some
warming will be noticed with patience. While it may leave hop lovers
disappointed, this would be the perfect stout for one who does not like for their
beer to have any bite. The typical stout flavors can be fully experienced in this very
soft rendition.
This stout has distinction from others, partly for geographic
reasons. This brew has a sincerity and a softness. There is nothing to dislike, it
has a little coppery taste in the water but even this adds balance to the product.
This beer is brewed in a warm climate and its thirst-quenching qualities make
sense.
