Sand Creek Brewing Company,    Black River Falls, WI
A primordial Extra Pale Bold, Brazen Beer, Brewed Behind The Cheddar Curtain.
Appearance
A pale yellowish gold, lightly effervescent and with significant cloudiness. Head
was a nice white, good height, thick and creamy with a chunky and crusty
character and decent lacing.
Medium gold with a short head great lacing. This ale is cloudy with plenty of large
bubbles. Unassuming and basic at first look, hopefully a surprise lays in wait.

Aroma
Surprisingly light, particularly for this style. I am getting an orange citrus and mild
tangy grapefruit with faint piny hops. There should be more hop punch that is
missing here.
Hoppy, but not overly so. Relative to an IPA, this is very light. The nice thing is that
it allows the soft fruits and malt components to express themselves. Sour apple
and cherry with a peppery hop.

Palate
A bit crisp and also a bit creamy, as the requisite piny hop but on a very mild
side. A pleasant orange and sweet grapefruit but wanting for more of authority.
Acid and sour are not as spicy as other IPAs. A good bit of moderate sweet malt
acts as a counterbalance to the bitterness.

Finish
The hop grows in strength that is controlled, perhaps to a fault for the IPA style.
Strong malt, and sweet and tangy citrus chimes back in with the hop in a nice
alternating fashion, but overall too light for the IPA style.
The hop continues as the brew gains bitterness. From out of the blue comes a
little sweetness, salt, and pepper, decently balanced.

Synopsis
A nicely flavored beer but that is said with criticism. The IPA style is a very
authoritative one and this lacks authority in that realm. Dedicated India pale ale
fans would like the flavors but I think would be wanting for more strength in all of
them.
Not spectacular but well-controlled. So far I can say this brewery has a hallmark
of being balanced with attention to the basics.
