Our Pale Ale List
San Francisco's famous Liberty Ale was first brewed on the 18th of April, 1975 to
celebrate the 200th anniversary of Paul Revere's historic ride. It is virtually
handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer in one of the smallest and most
traditional breweries in the world. Liberty Ale is made with the finest barley malt,
fresh, whole hops, top fermenting yeast, pure water and the simple, natural
methods which reflect our exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. It is
"dry hopped", a classic ale tradition, and slowly completes its fermentation in
sealed vats in our cellars. This unique process creates Liberty Ale's distinctive
bouquet and uncommonly delicate, entirely natural carbonation.
Appearance
Pale golden color with significant cloudiness. Head is off-white, crowns up nicely,
and is lasting. Head develops a creamy chunky character and the lacing on the
glass is great. Cloudy gold with an outstanding off-white head. Good lacing.
Aroma
Nice and strong fruity aroma with pear, apple, and banana scents along with
some spicy hop in the background. Spicy and lively, the dry hop method shines
and fruit abounds. Powerful, distinctive, and inviting. On the sweeter side with a
light warmth, pear, banana, and cherry.
Palate
Crisp with pale malt and citrus sweet. Clean with significant flavor right out of the
gate. Light hop flavor is also present in the palate. Soft initially, then a little hop
bite, plenty of spice. Dry with a small bit of malt sweetness.
Finish
The hops burst in, strongly and quickly balancing out the sweet, then overtaking it
leaving a mildly rough hop flavor. Enough sweet seeps back in at the end to wrap
up with an interesting tangy quality. Crisp and lasting. Some salt, hops, and the
fruitiness remains in the background with a hint of acid.
Synopsis
A decent example of the pale ale style, but a bit outside the pure-bred realm as
Anchor Steam usually is. Interesting with light fruit and malt sweet, full flavored
hoppiness and spice finally mixing for a tangy essence. Has the characteristic
dull but bumpy and heavy hop character that I know Anchor Steam for. Anchor has
always impressed me with their uniqueness, brewing process, and quality
ingredients. This is on the lighter end of the Anchor Steam spectrum but still has
some punch.
