Great Lakes Brewing Co., Cleveland, OH
In celebration of our company's 20th Anniversary, we've brewed this more robust
interpretation of our first beer, a Dortmunder style lager. "Imperial" refers to an
extra hearty or regel beer, and our Imperial Dortmunder delivers on both counts.
The owners and staff thank you for all of your support. Slainte ! ESTABLISHED
1988. Enjoy the bolder, fuller-bodied version of our flagship Dortmunder-style
golden lager. This imperial lager is perfectly balanced between malt sweetness
and dry hop flavors, yet slightly darker in color and richer in finish. In keeping with
the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, this beer is traditionally brewed from all natural
ingredients: barley, hops, yeast and water. No chemicals or preservatives are
used.
Beer Blitz Rater Comments

Appearance
Nice gold and copper tones, very clean and clear, adequate carbonation. Head
had a decent rocky character for a lager beer, darker off-white in color, of decent
duration. Also had good lacing on the glass. Crystal clear medium amber color.
Moderate duration of the head but with good lacing. Small effervescent bubbles
provide a nice eye-appeal, impressive and inviting.
Aroma
Great strength there, especially for the lager style. Grainy scents along with faint
fruity tones - orange and apple - with just a pinch of spiciness. Surprisingly
strong alcohol tones are present but in no way is the aroma unpleasant. Malt
presence in the forefront but not too cereal-like. A little hop creeps in to give this
a nice balance.
Palate
Flavors stand out immediately but still very smooth drinking. Pleasantly mild
graininess, barley malt sweetness, and mild carbonation. Hints of hop and
citrus, very agreeable. Full bodied yet light and tasty. A good texture to the beer,
mild creaminess and pleasing carbonation level. Rich flavor throughout this
beer does many things correctly. Dominates the palate with traditional lager
ingredients presented in a delicious fashion.
Finish
Grainy taste quickly ramps up with a definitive yet mild carbonation kick. The
mild citrusy sweetness carries through giving a touch of balance to the typical
lager grainy character. The balance eliminates any harshness and there are
mild alcohol tones as the aroma suggested. At the very end there is even some
hop zing ! Malty and soft along with some sour and salt. Slightly sweet, slightly
grainy. A lot of character with a requisite amount of hop. Has a touch of alcohol
warming.
Synopsis
A truly definitive excellent lager taste. Has some extra sweetness that is well
balanced with the hops. Very smooth drinking for such a full flavored high
alcohol content lager. The best lager rating I can recall to date, sure to be
considered special by the dedicated lager drinkers out there. What I had
anticipated, this has been specifically retooled with an objective in mind. Lives
up to its billing as a stalwart lager. I appreciate that this beer accomplishes so
much without going off on a tangent. Simply a true lager and a darn good one !
