New Holland Brewing Co. , Holland, MI
Delicious beer delivered with painstaking consistency, that’s our philosophy.
We'll give you awhile to drink it in.
Appearance
Light golden color, off-white head dissipates quickly. Color is clean and clear,
looks more like a lager or pilsner. Lighter than expected for an ale or pumpkin
ale.
Clear dark gold brew with a light head. Well carbonated and with a thin look,
almost a lager in appearance. A little lacing on the glass, less full than I had
anticipated but not bad overall.

Aroma
OK strength level, light pumpkin, nutmeg, and background hops. Interestingly no
sweetness is suggested by the aroma.
Light and clean pumpkin with adequate
spice. Cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. Organic freshness and truly a seasonal
smell.

Palate
Flavors of pumpkin and nutmeg noticed immediately but on the light side. The
beer itself is crisp. As aroma suggested, no sweetness detected.
Nice body for a
light beer. A little hop and spice balances or holds down sweetness. Both
creamy and dry....a nice duality. A good drinking beer that is not overpowering.
Some layers of citrus enter the fray.

Finish
The pumpkin and nutmeg spice grow in intensity along with some extra hop zing
at the end. Trails off with a mild and pleasant bitter. Very mild saltiness and
sweetness is still absent.
Refreshing for a pumpkin style. A little salt and some
redeeming ale qualities, hop, malt, etc. Spices remain but don't dominate, not
entirely one dimensional. Sweet is held to a subtle level.

Synopsis
A flavorful beer, spice and pumpkin with the pumpkin a bit muted. Interesting is
the lack of any significant sweetness throughout...not necessarily a bad thing but
I think a bit more sweetness would have added a nice extra dimension. Beer
drinkers that want more of a traditional beer taste without any "candy" nature
however, will appreciate this variant in the pumpkin style.
Pumpkin is not my
favorite style, but this is a fine light example of that style. Some pumpkin brews
can be quickly heavy or syrupy, this isn't. Does most everything well and is a
solid introduction to the pumpkin variety of fall brews. Even though it is heavily
spiced it doesn't forget that it is a beer first.
