Rye Lager List
Great Divide Brewing Hoss Rye Lager beer bottle

Hoss Rye Lager Beer Head
Hoss is based on the marzen lagers of Germany. Rich, layered malt notes, with
hints of cherry and dark malts, dominate, while the unique addition of rye imparts
a slightly earthy, spicy character. Hoss finishes crisp and dry, and its brilliant
red-orange color is a toast to the late-summer sunsets that make the perfect
backdrop for this beer. Suggested food pairings: Veal bratwurst, barbeque
chicken, carnitas (pork) tacos, Camembert cheese, German chocolate cake.

Appearance
A brilliant orange to brown copper tone when held to a light, has a mild but evenly
dispersed cloudiness which is largely forgiven due to the style. The light beige
head is tall and foamy, of decent duration, and with excellent lacing on the glass.
Full bodied amber that is lightly carbonated. Orangish hues build under a
moderate off-white head. A little cloudy with some lacing.

Aroma
A wonderfully strong aroma considering we are in the lager beer category. I am
getting scents of cherry, sweet malt, and a nice rye in that order, but overall each
is not too far apart in strength.
Very earthy for a lager. A strong rye base which
anchors a multitude of flavors, namely nuts, dates,  a sweet malt, and a soft
alcohol warmth.

Palate
Smooth and clean, yet wonderfully full for a lager style beer. There is even a slight
creamy texture in the palate. A tasty rye flavor and requisite malty lager taste.
A
superior lager that is heavy on cracked rye flavor. Drinks somewhat like an ale but
has a bock style essence. Unique and all over the place, the sweetness creeps
in at the end of the palate.

Finish
The good rye flavor carries through but makes some room for a light sweet malt,
earthy hoppy spice, and a pleasant cherry flavor dances in and out of the mix. A
nicely balanced composition.
A formidable lager that finishes light. Hops are
present and interestingly balance the edge on the rye into a gentle softness.
Clever and different.

Synopsis
A sincere enjoyment. Great Divide and a great brewery ! Amazingly full for a lager
style beer, the rye tastes wonderful if you like rye in general. While probably not
even needed, the cherry component added a nice complexity, and (except for its
dominance in aroma) it stayed put as a complimentary background addition to
the rest of the beer as it needed to. Any more cherry would have been overdone,
but that wasn't the case. I will definitely buy this again.
I love rye as an ingredient
and it was fun to experience it in a well composed lager form. Fun to drink and
versatile, Great Divide scores another "A".
