Barleywine Ale List
Flying Dog Brewery, Denver, CO

Appearance
Very dark brown and gold, reddish copper tones when held to a light. Head is
good for the style (typically subdued for barleywines), of medium duration. Head
was light tan and creamy with some subtle rocky character. Just a touch of
cloudiness held down this score, also by just a touch. Dark brown copper hue
with a sheen when held to a light. Moderately carbonated with large bubbles that
dissipate quickly. Not overly thick but beer obviously has much in solution.
Aroma
Wow, aroma grabs you, strong the way I like it to be. Sweet and wine-like with a
tangy citrus abounds with orange, grape, cherry, and raspberry scents. Some
maltiness and alcohol tones trail in the background. Extremely inviting and
intriguing. Fruity, malty, and well pronounced. Sweetness and alcohol warmth
with seasonal fruits present. Dried cherry, fig, and pear mixed with a scotch-like
roast of barley. Definitive but balanced and complex in character.
Palate
Nice, a full bodied malty sweet ale flavor is immediately noticed. Has mild
creamy quality and leaves some tangy citrus flavor on the tip of the tongue.
Aggressive, warm, but also disarming and relaxing. Powerful malts five way to
dried fruit and soulful sweets. Some light and needed bitter elements provided by
the hops. Not the strongest of the strong, generally stronger barleywines have a
grainy cereal taste that this does not.
Finish
More full bodied flavor, more creaminess. The citrus and initial sweet makes way
for a malty ale flavor. Some chocolate, woody, and spice noticed, with the tangy
citrus chiming back in on the back of the throat. Finishes with a significant
warming quality leaving me with a "whiskey breath" sensation. Rich and
mouthwatering. Sugars, or more to the point, brown sugars. Very apparent
alcohol warming throughout. Fruits also follow through and give a light floral
character. Strange to say but evocative of pollen or clover. Some dark flavors
come out in a combination of hop and roast.
Synopsis
No beating around the bush, I love this barleywine. One of the best shining stars
in the entire formidable Flying Dog line. Captures the full barleywine style
essence with a hop presence but balanced a bit to the sweeter side of the scale.
A crafty beer and a surprise. Clearly a seasonal selection with complexity at every
turn. Overwhelming to some and spot on to others, I lean toward the latter. A lot of
care has been taken to create, in all due respect, a difficult style of beer. Darn
good !
Horn Dog is a big, malty monster of a beer. Fortunately, its wrath is moderately
hopped and tastes like licorice and chocolate. Horn is such a robust beast that
we have to keep it caged and contained at the brewery for a couple months
before letting it integrate with the public.
