Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Clipper City Brewing Co. Baltimore, MA
This here pounder has fine layer of yeast at her bottom. It won't send you to Davy
Jones' locker but will protect your brew from the rigors of life at sea ! From the
centuries-old tradition of Belgian Abbey monks, comes our "Uber-Abbey" Ale.
Aromatic and full-bodied, pouring deep burgundy in color, it's bold, it's Heavy
Seas. Grab a little…Holy Sheet!…or you'll be swept overboard.
Appearance
Beautiful dark brown to mahogany tint, burgundy when held to a light. No
cloudiness here, very clear. Head is light tan and somewhat rocky but it
dissipates quickly hurting the score a tad. Very lustrous deep red. Great rockiness
in the head. Clear in appearance. Carbonation is somewhat lacking. Dense and
solid, not surprising for the style.
Aroma
Very strong aroma. Alcohol tones abound along with some raspberry sweetness
and Belgian style maltiness. The aroma is inviting and good aromas are
characteristic of the Heavy Seas line, this one is no different. Wow, a real punch.
Dark rich notes of dried fruit, fig and black cherry with malty sweetness. A little
sweeter than a typical Belgian ale. Alcohol component is very relevant with slight
roast being a definitive quality.
Palate
Clean, and the raspberry sweetness abound from the get go. Not gross, but I
think the sweetness is overdone and overall the beer is a bit thin for a Belgian
style ale. Soft and malty with alcohol tones. Doesn't necessarily reach a peak.
Drinkable but lacking in character. Base elements come through but not much
else. Very slight oak and brown sugar. I think this beer has good elements in
solution but they don't seem to elevate.
Finish
The raspberry sweetness continues to carry through, this beer is again not gross
but way, way toward the sweet side, I believe to a magnitude that is a detriment.
Some Belgian-like fullness and saltiness awakens but this is still a bit thin for the
style. All components which are basically there, malt, alcohol, sweet, and a little
salt comes through and little else. No real "pop", middle of the road for Heavy
Seas.
Synopsis
Generally a good flavored beer. One must like their beer well on the sweet side
with just a hint of Belgian style saltiness to fully appreciate. To reiterate,
compared with other available Belgian ales this is a bit thin and I believe the
sweetness is a little overdone, hence the "B" rank score. Full flavored but
dissipates quickly. Heavy Seas has done much better with other styles. Good, but
you could do much better with other craft beer examples.
