Appearance
A very pale appearance, like that of a pilsner. A decent snow white head for the
style. Clear, no cloudiness, effervescent, light golden, just a bit pale. Beautiful
light golden color with a rocky and lasting head relative to the lager style. Clear
and clean effervescent look, very nice.
Aroma
Not bad aroma strength for the lager style. Grainy, sour malt, a little back end
sweetness but mostly the characteristically harsh hoppy aroma. Hoppy and a bit
sour. A slight hard water smell. Light malt and sweetness, slightly better than
middle of the road, and sincere to Munchen.
Palate
Tastes of grains and pure water, clean and crisp, but less crisp than appearance
would suggest. Good but maybe a bit thin, even for a lager. Light and crisp with a
bit of a sweet and silky back end. Rather straight-forward, a yeasty bread
component was a pleasant surprise.
Finish
Carbonation and the harsh graininess grows in intensity. Has a sour malt, sour
grain and hop harshness, with just a whisper of sweetness at the very end. This
is quickly overcome by a final sharp grainy aftertaste. A soft chew maltiness. A
slight rough unpleasantness that may be attributed to the beers storage. A little
sour to balance the little sweet.
Synopsis
Not awful, not great, but a typical German lager essence. Not my favorite German
or other lager for that matter, but a decent drinkable beer. Overall a good German
beer experience. Not overly complex but with much to consider. Not spectacular
but good.
