Our Ale List
Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Great Divide Brewing Co., Denver, CO
Since 1995, Hibernation Ale has been our celebrated winter tradition. This robust,
dry-hopped ale has a malty richness balanced with a complex hop profile and
hearty, warming character.
Appearance
Nice clear medium dark red tone. Very inviting, no cloudiness at all. Head is just
off-white in color, medium rocky character and duration. Rich amber to red color.
Very little cloudiness and adequate carbonation. Head is lacking comparatively
for ales but overall redeeming qualities.
Aroma
Nice strength of aroma, malty, hoppy, and spicy scents. Malty cocoa and fruit
tones. Provides hints of alcohol and sweetness. Similar to scotch style ales in its
presentation.
Palate
Full flavored, medium to great mouth feel. Some creaminess noted and hoppy
spiciness without any really sharp bitterness. Strong malt is vehicle for alcohol
content. Some rough flavor components make the beer a little bottom-heavy but
its qualities outshine - good winter warmer.
Finish
The finish comes through strong, more hoppiness, mostly mild bitterness, more
malt, and the alcohol warming tones breakout in a pleasant way. Basically well
balanced but more toward the hoppy side on the hoppy/sweet scale. Delivers in
the finish. Powerful maltiness prevails. Full mouth taste doesn't overpower but
this beer certainly makes its presence known.
Synopsis
A very impressive "American ale", impressed with the level of character. As
advertised it is hearty and warming, I intend to buy again. It is only available in
winter and I know Beer Blitz management is waiting for the opportunity to
repurchase (the glass photo was lost due to technical problems). Marketed as
Hibernation - definitely a seasonal affair. Reminds me of a scotch style ale
bordering on a barleywine. May be too strong for the sake of itself.
