Clipper City Hang Ten weizenbock bottle cap
Hang Ten Weizenbock in a pilsner or lager style glass
"Hang Ten" is the Heavy Seas wheat beer you've been waiting for.  A classic
German-style weizen bock- slightly cloudy and bursting with flavor.  Hang on and
surf the Heavy Seas wave.

Appearance
Slightly golden dark brown color, copper when held to a light. Cloudy as typical
for the style with light and dark colored particles in suspension. Head was a light
tan, moderately rocky, of medium duration.
Medium to dark brown. Heavy
sedimentation with large particles. Head dissipates somewhat quickly. Good for
the style but not great even for an unfiltered beer. No sheen, a little basic.

Aroma
Significant strength and complexity. Smells of wheat, various spices, some
orange citrusy sweet, and mild alcohol tones. For whatever reason the Heavy
Seas brands all tend to have a strong complex aroma presence, this one is no
different.
Malt with very discernible wheat. Terrific toasted wheat with notes of
savory and honeycomb. Rich with a cut of hop. Citrus tones include a lemon zest.
Some oak and alcohol tones with wheat being the star of them all.

Palate
Starts off smooth and significantly sweet, in fact sweet to a fault in my view. Only
the sweet orange citrus was noticed in the initial part of the taste.
Sweet and
syrupy. Rich malt sustains with a nutty and oaky character. Perhaps some
vanilla. The other elements fade giving a sweet wheat palate.

Finish
More wheat flavor expands but wow the sweet citrus flavor continues on, again to
a fault in my opinion. Some spiciness detected in the end but well overshadowed
by the overpowering sweetness.
Rich initially but thinning at the end. Bold flavors
stay bold, subtle ones stay subtle. I don't necessarily dislike but I have had more
intriguing finishes.

Synopsis
If you want really, really sweet citrus this is the beer for you. The sweetness is
overbearing, I would have much preferred more spicy and wheat component
strength to balance this one out. The syrupy sweet nature was extreme enough o
hurt this beers score significantly.
Not my favorite Heavy Seas product. Good but
not incredible. Wheat is the base and is there throughout. There are plenty of
positives but due to the extra sweet / syrupy feel I am going to cut my synopsis
short with a run of the mill rating.
