Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Great Lakes Brewing Co., Cleveland, OH
Appearance
A golden copper with a touch of amber, nice and clear, and relative to the style.
Off-white head, some rocky character, and of decent duration. Clean, clear,
golden amber. Lighter carbonation and superior rocky character in the head. Some
staying power and lacing, pretty, an A+ for this style.
Aroma
Lemon citrus, grains, sweet malts, what is there is wonderful but lacking in overall
strength of aroma. Light malts and initial sour...give it time..., the sweetness comes
out to form an illustrative balance. Clean and refreshing. Soft alcohol tones and a
little roast. Overall very good, maybe lacking some individual components.
Palate
Flavorful right away, some tart and sweet lemon and malty sweetness. Nice flavor,
a constructive criticism would be that it is overall a bit too light. Creamy, malty,
tasty. Heavier in hops than a German example, not uncommon for American
brews. A rich Oktoberfest lager but also a light example.
Finish
The sweet malt enhances, the carbonation and graininess grow in intensity
weighted more heavily towards the very end. Malt prevails, delivers but some
flavors battle masking the true potential, some warmth.
Synopsis
A crisp, refreshing, good example of the style. The sweet malt, grains, and mild
hop alternate. A constructive criticism would be a bit more punch with what is
already there. Typical of Great Lakes beers this one makes the "A list" in the low
to mid 90's. More strength would be need to propel to "A+" rank. I find Great Lake
beers delve into wonderfully complex flavors but usually on the lighter side.
Perhaps this is intentional by the brewery to provide craft beer flavors in a
presentation that is very drinkable in quantity if so desired. Much in solution but
this beer doesn't necessarily break from the style. Some heartiness and
creaminess but very drinkable and true to the Oktoberfest style. Great malts
balance down the slight hoppiness.
