Gordon Biersch Czech Style beer head
Pilsner is a crisp, golden, robustly hopped lager. This style beer was first brewed
in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, in 1842 using a sample of special yeast smuggled
from Germany by a Czech monk. Before this time, all beers were dark and cloudy.
Pilsner was the first beer to be brewed clear and golden. Prost !
Gordon Biersch Brewing Co., San Jose, CA
Appearance
An attractive medium golden color, effervescent, clean and clear, as a Pilsner
should be. Head was tall, snow white, lasting, and even devloped a light rocky
character after sitting. Had nice lacing on the glass, a definitive pilsner
appearance all-around.
A pretty golden color. Well carbonated with a good frothy
head. This one exceeded expectations and was great throughout with lacing on
the glass.

Aroma
Nice and aromatic for the style, graininess, fruitiness - grape, kiwi, and lime, and
a fair amount of spicy hops in the background.
Light hop aroma with a soft malt.
Standard pilsner aroma with the volume turned down.

Palate
Crisp and full flavored for the style, grainy and a light sweet, nice and clean. Very
enjoyable pilsner.
Sweet and flavorful with a hop bite. Pleasant and drinkable
with the bitter and sweet in a good balance. On the lighter side.

Finish
Strength picks up quickly as does the aggressive hops. The mild sweet is rapidly
overtaken by strong hoppiness and graininess. The end has a bit of a rough
edge that stops just short of being too sharp.
Crisp and slightly dry, the requisite
bitterness subsides just enough for a little sweetness to creep in.

Synopsis
Crisp, effervescent, clean, clear, grainy, aggressive hops, and a mild sweet that
just slightly remains as the hops take over...yep, that's a pilsner. A wonderful
purebred of the style for one who needs to know what a pilsner should taste like.
The aroma had less strength than I expected but all other aspects are on point. I
was surprised a chain restaurant would produce such a good beer. This is a true
pilsner and I think I prefer it to Urquel.
