Maibock List
Blonde Bock is a moderately hopped beer with a rich, malty flavor. Made popular
in the early 1600's, bock beers were originally brewed by monks to minimize
hunger pangs during fasting periods. Most bock beers are dark in color. Ours is
a golden with a rich creamy head. Prost !
Gordon Biersch Brewing Co., San Jose, CA
Appearance
A nice light golden color with moderate effervescence, nice and clear. Head is
white, tall, creamy in character, of moderate duration. Nice lacing on the glass. A
clean pure light gold lager. Clear, no sediment. The medium head breaks into a
mildly rocky compilation. The name certainly captures the appearance.
Aroma
Decent aroma strength, a light sweet pale malt, very light citrus, and some faint
alcohol tones swirling in the background. A cleanly light malted bock. Plenty sweet
with a light hop. Pleasant and surprisingly strong on the alcohol warmth tones.
Palate
Flavorful right away with sweet pale malt, orange citrus, good but a criticism is that
it is a bit light on carbonation for the bock style. Sweet with alcohol and a touch of
roughness on the back end. Honey sugar flavors give this bock its oomph. Pale
malt but without roasting a bit cereal, like a Czech or a Russian lager.
Finish
A very nice pick up in strength in the finish. The sweet pale malt and lager
graininess gains intensity and then a light to moderate hop quickly balances
down the punch of the sweet malt with mild spice and a very faint orange peel. Not
a sissy beer but it finishes smoothly with both a creamy sweet and a touch of
harsh bitter. Finishes within the range of a maibock to standard bock with plenty of
alcohol.
Synopsis
A good beer that I enjoyed drinking. It starts with the traditional maibock style tangy
sweet pale malt and citrus, only a tad on the light side. The entrance of hops
made this unique and enjoyable but takes its a bit outside the box of what one
would expect in a traditional maibock style, this held the score down a bit on this
beer. The appearance of the beer hides much of its composition. It surprises me
that GB as a large restaurant brewery takes the risks that it does. A nice light
character overall yet full on flavor.
