Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
Black on black, no light can penetrate this porter. Awesome for the style. Head is
a chocolaty brown, lasting, creamy, and rocky. Lacks nothing here in my view.
Wonderful rocky head, actually a shiny glittery element in caramel colored foam,
amazing. Dark, dark, dark brew thick and robust with a heavy pour.
Aroma
Strong aroma, alcohol tones apparent. Roasted malt as expected, unexpected
array of fruity tones and chocolate in the background. Inviting for sure, more
complex than your typical porter. Coffee, pine, licorice, sweet, malty, roast,
fruit...this brew is all over the place...in a great way. Also has nuttiness and
hoppiness. Complexity is the key, it isn't overly roasted so it isn't a stout and while
well controlled in composition aroma jumps out of the glass at the drinker.
Terrific !
Palate
Nice light roasted malt character immediately noticed along with a tangy flavor at
the tip of the tongue, also a hint of coffee. Has the thinner porter mouth feel even
though it looks like a stout. Great ! Hearty and wonderful. Flavors are just tasty
and are clearly of porter style. This beer is almost chewy but at the same time it is
soft. Alcohol tones are present and flow with a sour bitter. It reveals many
elements and distributes them over the tongue. An exciting beer drinking
experience.
Finish
Glorious strong black coffee and dark chocolate essence with some mild
spiciness in the background. Hides the alcohol content well. Some citrus tones
but very faint in the background. Overall awesome ! Full mouth flavor with a crisp
clean finish. Key is balance of hop to sweet to roast. Complex sugar malt content
is controlled by quality water and the yeast that lend carbonation. It has a French
roast coffee element comparable to the best coffee houses. Some bitter hop bite
is needed to balance out the sweet and this one is spot on.
Synopsis
A true porter, could be used by one to define the style. The roast flavor is strong
but as it should be it is lighter in strength and mouth feel than the best stouts.
Has some complexity in the field of Porters which are often only one dimensional
in flavor. Be forewarned, if you use this to define the porter style you will probably
be disappointed in all other examples. This is definitely the best Porter I have
ever experienced hence the perfect score. I can not imagine another Porter
topping this one. A truly unique experience straddling the line between a well
crafted porter and something much more. I have had this porter before but it has
never tasted so well. Hidden components may only exist with care taken to age
this beer, 5-6 months should be plenty. Age warm and serve chilled.
