Saison Ale List

Appearance
A pale golden color, cloudy, but that's relevant to the style. Head is snow white,
medium height, of moderate duration. Not impressive generally but actually great
for the saison ale style of beer. Golden and traditional to the Saison Ale style.
Cloudy but as expected. Sediment in solution and light but as the style goes.
Aroma
Very respectable strength of aroma. The style specific peppery spiciness, pale
malt, and a touch of a less style specific sweetness, basically a pear and orange
citrus. Very mild alcohol tones. Crisp and refreshing. A wheat malt, soft citrus,
berry and clover sweet, and a bread-like saltiness.
Palate
Clean water, pale malt, and some initial farmhouse style peppery spice. More
than expected pear-like citrus sweet, typically of ales but atypical of most
farmhouse style beer. Reminds me of a hybrid of a Munich-style wheat lager
fused with a Belgian farmhouse ale. Initial sweet balanced with a salty vinegar
bitter. Lemon is the sour fruit component and it is welcomed and well-placed.
Finish
Strength leaps out with authority. The requisite peppery spice flavor
predominates but is balanced a bit by the sweet malty citrus. Some mild
saltiness and an array of bitters chime in at the very end. The least hoppy Flying
Dog I can recall, great natural sours to complete its thought, and crisp saltiness
that leaves the drinker wanting for more.
Synopsis
An enjoyable example of the Saison or Farmhouse ale style. Has the requisite
pepper spice, and floral notes but adds a bit of traditional ale sweetness. A good
representation of the style although I am sure this is more sweet than the ales
enjoyed in the farmhouse from days gone by. A good versatile warm weather
brew to be served cold. Very drinkable and well-crafted, sort of a "tour of
Middle-Europe" because many style elements converge with the farmhouse
essence.
Wee wee...haw haw haw. Garde Dog Biere De Garde, our spring seasonal beer,
is a French style. But unlike the French themselves, this Biere de Garde won't
surrender on taste. Garde Dog has a lighter body and is subtly sweet but also
has a complex yeast character and balanced malt profile. Traditionally brewed in
the winter and consumed in the Spring and Summer months, "Biere de Garde"
means "beer for keeping," but you'll have to pick it up soon because it's just a
seasonal brew.
