Our Amber Ale List
Williams Brothers Brewing Co., Scotland, UK
Heather Ale

Appearance
Color is a golden yellow to light brown along with mild cloudiness. The head was
very white, lacked any significant rocky character, and was relatively short in
duration. Color is more reminiscent of a lager than an ale. Light golden, what
one would expect from a lager. This example is exceedingly cloudy, not one of
the better appearances of our selections. Head is present but not the greatest
attribute, or is it ?
Aroma
Very strong aroma. Spicy scents present remind me of both fresh cut flowers and
pumpkin pie with whipped cream. The strength and uniqueness of the aroma did
impress. Spicy with tones of vanilla and bread. Extremely fragrant, makes one
want to forgive for the deficiencies in appearance. Floral, sweet, and intriguing.
Palate
Very thin and watery. Not unpleasant, just watery. Some vague spicy components
were noticed. Thin and a little salty. Not too crazy about this one. It reminds me of
a beginners homebrew. The qualities of this beer are its base ingredients which
are fine but it doesn't evolve any from that.
Finish
Spices, pumpkin pie flavor, and malty sweetness come alive. Good carbonation
balance and a bit of a pleasant taste. This beer is still thin for an ale. Clean and a
little refreshing but thin and nothing really special. Using vanilla in the description
is dead on, purely middle of the road beer.
Synopsis
An overall decent flavor but not a good ale. This one is more reminiscent of a
decent lager or for those who are partial to the "pumpkin" beers as that comes
out in the flavor. Maybe a good choice for Thanksgiving dinner. The aroma had
more real character than any other category. Heather is not a classification of
style as much as I believe a geographical concern, Scotland / N. England as a
point of origin. Occasionally we mention price as a point, why not demand value
for your buck ? I can not say that this one delivers that due to all the other
examples available with much more complexity and sense of adventure.
