Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Founders Brewing Co., Grand Rapids, MI
Dry Hopped Pale Ale

Appearance
Pale copper and yellow hues but with some cloudiness. Head was off-white in
color with a slightly rocky character. Head was a bit short in both height and
duration. Good lacing on the glass. Very slight cloudiness to this golden hued
ale. Soft carbonation and dissipating head can be overlooked to some degree.
Nice lacing on the glass, overall good.
Aroma
Good strength, particularly for this style. Definite hop spice along with dual fruity
tones, both grape and orange. Very fragrant floral and spring fruit aroma. Peach,
melon, and even lilac. Appears to be delicate in character with some sweet.
Good attributes in this category.
Palate
As aroma suggests, hoppy spice and fruity flavors, again the touch of grape and
orange with the requisite hop zing. Mild and smooth drinking yet full flavored.
Thinly creamy mouth feel reminiscent of some homebrews. Honest and
authentic to its style. The dry hopping creates a subtle nose. The beer has its
acidity and bitterness without having a sharp bite. Some soft sweetness as the
floral comes full circle - Pollen and clover - really unique.
Finish
The hop presence rapidly balances the sweetness, then cancels it out. Multiple
hop flavors are there giving this beer some complexity. The bitter flavors are very
smoothed out around the edges, no real "bite". Finishes dry with the balancing of
flavors cancelling each other out and then finally vanishing from the tastebuds.
Light and airy. Kind of like sipping foam. Dry, with the floral presence once more
revealing itself. Seems to separate somewhat but not dissappointing.
Synopsis
Definitely as advertised, true to the style. Hoppy spice and fruity citrus tones.
Interesting how the array of hop flavors blend, balance, and overcome the
sweetness. Stops short of having a bitter bite. I could see this beer appealing to
both those who like the class of heavily hopped beers and those who don't. This
is due to the complexity of hop flavors that are also presented in a soft way.
Another quality product from the Founders Brewery, albeit an odd one. I don't
mean "odd" in any negative way, just a departure from standard microbrews. I
compare it to a Belgian brew lacking the wild flavor swings and alcohol warmth. I
like this ale and it would compliment a number of dishes, particularly shellfish.
