An intriguing dark ale with a touch of smokiness
Weyerbacher Brewing, Easton, PA        www.weyerbacher.com
Beer Blitz Rater Comments
Appearance
An inviting dark brown tone, reddish brown when held to a light. Good
carbonation but just a bit of cloudiness. Head was a light tan, a touch of rocky
character after sitting but not overly tall and not long lasting.
Light brown with a
medium head. Lacking a little in size but with moderate duration. Light lacing,
good marks but not head turning.

Aroma
Decent strength with sweet and sour fruity tones. Some orange, pineapple, and
grape scents detected along with sweet dark malt, subdued alcohol tones, and a
light but present smokiness in the background as advertised.
A traditional nutty
brown with a hint of smokiness. Some caramel sweet, some rich fruit... a deep
plum is hidden behind a toasty malt.

Palate
Initial sweetness and citrus flavor but the sweet is surprisingly subdued, more
so than the aroma would suggest. Just a touch on the thin side but there is
some creamy mouth feel to this ale.
Full flavor with some hop, good solid malt
and a hint of toastiness and salt. I like the blend of flavors, some of the sweet
transforming into sours.

Finish
Fullness of flavor picks up and the slight sweetness vanishes rapidly with an
unexpected hoppy kick, mild but real. A small variety of bitters dance around the
tastebuds. Some sour tones chime in along with the mild smoky overtones.
The
sourness presents a contrast of composition. What would be creamy is
complicated by an acidic bite. Good malt content spreads over the tongue and
isn't overly aggressive.

Synopsis
Not my favorite ale to date but my favorite Weyerbacher product to date. A good
"midpoint" ale, not the fullest ale available but plenty enough character that it can
not be called weak. Both drinkable and flavorful, more on the spicy ESB side than
on the sweet side.
Not a challenging brew, it is what it is and what it is, is good.
It's called "Fireside" and that is where its best enjoyed. A lighter cold weather ale
that stands up.
