FAT TIRE Amber Ale's appeal is in its feat of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt
flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness. Named in honor of Jeff's
mountain bike trip from brewery to brewery.
New Belgium Brewing, Fort Collins, CO        www.newbelgium.com
Appearance
A nice copper bronze color, clear and effervescent. Head is medium height,
off-white in color, stays creamy and develops a slight chunkiness. The duration of
the head is only moderate with some lacing on the glass.
Light amber, nicely
carbonated, with an off-white head, clear. Brew flattens out rather quickly.

Aroma
Overall light, has some citrus ale qualities, basically a pineapple and grape with
light sweet malt. Seems well balanced with some mild hop in the background.
Mild with a soft bitter. Salt and sweet malt counterbalance a fresh and light
character. Overall modest in approach.

Palate
Nice and crisp carbonation, very light malt, some of the citrus comes through but
presents more as tangy flavors rather than sweet.
Well balanced and thirst
quenching. Orange and cocoa flavors packaged with an unassuming crispness.
A little hop detected to balance and smooth out an already light compilation.

Finish
The carbonation zest gets a bit sharper and the tanginess and mild sweet quickly
fade to a muted hop flavor. Has some graininess, a brief return of mild tanginess,
but finishes off with a mild hop bitter.
Finish doesn't really intensify, smooth with
just a touch of sweetness and a hint of roast to the malt.

Synopsis
Interesting and unique. I enjoyed this beer but its uniqueness held it back some
as we score per advertised style. Well balanced and alternating flavors -
tanginess, mild sweet malt, controlled hop bitter, and graininess tucked inside a
zesty carbonated package, drinks like a lager-ale hybrid, this is the least sweet
amber ale I have tried.
A nice summer/spring drinking beer. Maybe a little one or
two note for an amber ale but nothing unpleasant here. Tasty but thin, lacks some
wanted punch.
