Appearance
A moderately dark reddish brown, crystal clear, and effervescent. Head is a light
tan of moderate height and short in duration. The head stays dense with small
styrofoam like bubbles. Lacing is light but OK for the style.
Nice medium clear amber that is equally carbonated with a moderate beige head.
Aroma
Strong aroma, sweet bock style malt, cherry, chocolate, and mild alcohol tones to
back it all up.
Brown sugar with a little citrus and salt. The aroma is pronounced but a bit light
compared to other examples.
Palate
A decent fullness for the style, sweet bock expected malt, cherry, and a clean
carbonated water essence.
Creamy and medium sweet with a lighter carmel roast. Grainy malt and muted
flavors under a general sweetness.
Finish
Some bittersweet chocolate comes through, and then there is more cherry. The
typical bock style sweet malt is surprisingly absent in the finish. The alcohol
tones take over and a bit of a salt component comes through.
The sweet ebbs and flows into a dirty dryness. Relatively hoppy and
disproportionate for this style and Cincinnati brewery.
Synopsis
Not a bad overall taste, but definitely outside the box per style. Do not use this as
an example if you are trying the dopplebock style for the first time, it is not a typical
example. For this style there should be more sweet malt and chocolate tones,
lose the cherry and salt, and ensure that the sweet carries through. A reasonable
craft beer from a small brewery, but.... Moerlein fails to capture the essence of the
dopplebock style. This does provide a drinkable and sweet fortified amber lager
experience great for a Bengals tailgate ...Who Dey ?!
You've discovered Moerlein Emancipator- a robust Doppelbock brewed to
commemorate the 75th anniversary of the repeal of prohibition. Six varieties of
uniquely blended malts create a smooth toasted character with a deep brown
color and complex hints of caramel and toffee. Celebrate the emancipation of
America's honorable brewing tradition this season by rolling out the barrels of
Moerlein Emancipator Doppelbock.
