Great Lakes Brewing Co., Cleveland, OH
Named after the ship that frequently docked in Cleveland and sunk in Lake
Superior in 1975, our porter combines complex, roasty aroma with a bittersweet,
chocolate-coffee taste. In keeping with the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, this beer
is traditionally brewed from all natural ingredients: barley, hops, yeast, and water.
No chemicals or preservatives are used.

Appearance
Dark brown to black, a dark red when held to a light. Very effervescent, head is
light tan, tall, and of good duration. Head is more soft than rocky in character.
Light for style, a dark brown with considerable reds. Clean and clear, not traits I
normally associate with a Porter but being what they are does not hurt the eye
appeal. Solid head with some character, overall good.

Aroma
Good strength with surprising level of alcohol tones. Smells of black coffee with
faint roasted malt and lime in the background.
A lighter Porter, fruity tones, subtle
warmth, and a definite sweetness from the get go. Scents abound but a few are
absent.

Palate
Crisp but also a little thin. Just a hint of roasted malt flavor initially with trailing
tangy citrus.
Light and pleasant. Sweet and a bit creamy giving way to a slight bite
and some alcohol tones. Coffee and roasted malt are the central qualities with a
dark bitter cherry fruitiness.

Finish
Roasted malt and black coffee flavor prevail, a trace of chocolate detected at the
very end. A bit too crisp and thin for the style.
Some complexity but not to the
extent to confound. Flavors are delicately balanced, a tartness (that is needed)
ensues and completes the drinking experience. Perhaps needing this but not
wanting this. Overall good to very good.

Synopsis
Good flavor, certainly not one dimensional but not particularly complex either. The
roast has sort of a dull nature and the beer lacks a bit of creaminess for the style.
Tasty but too crisp and thin when compared to "A level" Porters. I will concede a
good Porter, just not a great Porter.
The extreme lighter side of the Porter class.
Does not have the notes of chicory or the dryness of the standard example. For
the introductory porter taster a nice solid and fun departure. Just a little outside
(on the light side of) the traditional porters.
