The continually hopped India Pale Ale
Appearance
A perfect color for the style, a light to medium golden color, effervescent, and as
clear as fine crystal ! A shiny and expressive sheen. Head is just barely off-white
in color, stands tall, and has a creamy and chunky character with good lacing on
the glass. Nice eye-appeal. Effervescent medium gold that is as clear as a bell.
Head sustains itself well with decent lacing.
Aroma
Nice and strong aroma, piney sharp hops and an orange peel zest
predominates with a whisper of sweet malt in the background. An intense piney
hop nose and also fruit and light malt. An orange and lime zest with some
rosemary spice scents.
Palate
Full flavored from the first sip, has both a crispness and a creamy quality, some
grainy flavor, some sweet malt, and a nice sharp hop kick relevant to the IPA
style. Hardcore hop but not out of line. Has soft clover, floral flavor, mild
strawberry, very nice, the hop predominates the others as it should for an IPA.
Finish
This beer develops and more impressive creaminess and the hops kick the door
the rest of the way in but in a totally enjoyable way. I can't say that the sweet
balances the hops but rather it rounds out the edges just enough to keep this IPA
Hercules strong but yet still enjoyable to drink. Silky with the hop and acids
cutting nicely. Bitter but good with a little sweet follow through. Clean water, light
malt, strong hop, a refreshing IPA.
Synopsis
WOW, nice and strong, just slightly declawed enough that I could drink this in any
quantity, all night long. This is significant because the IPA style is not my
personal favorite beer style. This IPA scores high because it is definitive of what
an IPA should be. The hop kick and zest would not disappoint any IPA lover and
as importantly the entire package is well done. Whereas others may have a
sloppy overload of hops, this IPA is obviously professionally crafted. Gutsy and
par for the course on a Dogfish Head scale. A well made beer that is durable
and tea-like. A solid quality IPA, well composed instead of being a
one-dimensional hoppy IPA.
