Founders Brewing Company, Grand Rapids, MI
Auch ! Yeah've nary had such a bonnie taste of heav'n since pullin' yer mouth off
yer mammy's teet. With more highland bitties and flavours than yer
grandmammy's haggis, Dirty Bastard Ale ain't fer the wee lads. And if its too
strong fer yer silk-wearin', poodle-walkin' arse, then its back to the loch with you,
nessy !
Appearance
A nice brown and ruby red tone but with cloudiness also. Head has a decent
rockiness and is light tan in color. Head was short in height and duration, typical
of most Scotch style or Barley wine style ales. Brown and red sheen under a light.
Cloudy product but not overly so with much in solution. Thick light beige head
dissipates somewhat quickly. Not terribly carbonated, solid composition, heavy in
appearance for the style.
Aroma
Strong presence and complex with sweet fruity tones a bit like cherry and grape. A
little whiskey scent with some trailing roasted malt and hop spice in the
background. Sweet warming alcohol tones mixed with berry. Dark cherry,
blackberry, and oddly even a little blueberry. Solid aromatic malt aroma mostly
sweet with just a little desired bitter.
Palate
Full flavored, sweet fruity flavors and roasted malt flavors. Strong and tasty, good
carbonation balance. Powerful caramel tones with a definite toffee flavor. Warmth
of aroma explodes into flavor as brew heightens itself. Creamy and full with just a
little bitter. A "Scotch Ale" provides a connotation with Scotch and its there. The
roasted barley may include a little rye and peat. I don't know if they are there but if
you close your eyes you can imagine such.
Finish
The sweet fruity tones fade a bit in the finish but make room for an enormous
array of new flavor components. Strong roasted malt, whiskey tones, a woody
flavor, and some hoppy spiciness grabs your attention. Has a significant alcohol
warming quality. Soft creamy taste. This beer doesn't overwhelm the senses
entirely but certainly gets its point across. Sweet, warm, and full for an ale, Scotch
style or not. This isn't as strong or lasting as some barley wines but shares the
qualities minus a more defined bitter or super sweet, this beer is a good halfway
point on the bitter/sweet scale.
Synopsis
A great example of the style, other than the cloudiness Founder's hit a home run
with this one. Strong, pleasant, interesting, and complex, gives all the sensations
of drinking a good cold beer and a nice Scotch, woody and warming. This brew is
a borderline house favorite to be enjoyed in colder weather particularly. I love the
style as I love Scotch qualities. This is a fine example with enough sweetness to
turn on the taste buds but not murder them. Fun ale to drink.
